Your first chance to show off your Pi!

It's official!! For our first meet, we'll be hosted at the brand new Google Campus, just off London's Silicon roundabout! With it being our first meet, things will be very fluid and we'll play rather by ear but if you'd like something addressed on the night, let us know in the comments!

Hope your Pi's are trickling through, mine's due next week, can't wait!

Look forward to meeting you all!

Mark

Great to meet everyone and see the Pi actually in people's hands at last.

For anyone who missed out (TKramer - oops!) or who wants to see the original ARM operating system in action, we will have a Pi at the next RISC OS User Group Of London meeting on Monday 21st May. Although we obviously have a particular interest in seeing RISC OS on the Pi, it will be running Linux stuff at the meeting.

Plus Beagle and Pandaboards and excellent curries too :-)

The meetup was my first of a kind meetup and a chance to witness the Pi device for the first time. Overall, it was a good gathering of like minded people driving the linux !

Was great to meet other Pi owners and hear about their ideas. I was also able to test my newly arrived Pi with someone's SD, so I know it's working fine. The learning curve now begins. Looking forward to the next Meetup.

It was great to meet so many folks looking forward to doing things with this kit, we had people from all walks of life (students, engineers, developers, teachers, web designers) all with great ideas, lets hope the momentum continues.

Just realised I must've left my SD card case at Google Campus :L Did anyone happen to pick it up at the end, or should I get in touch with Google Campus directly? It's aluminium, with 7dayshop.com printed on the front, and two Kingston 8GB Class-4 SD cards inside.

If anyone wants me to try images on my raspberry pi other then Debian (demo) and Debian (web server), then please bring along an SD card (preferably class 4) and I will show the image running on my pi.

Do we have any screens we can plug an pi's that people have into?

All done Mark - many thanks. I am now putting up a notice at Central Working, Shoreditch about the meeting

  • Mark O.

Hi Alistair, I have mailed you through this site to say thanks - did you not receive? Anyway - please email me on mark at thetechdoctors.co.uk with details of who I need to speak to?

    May 10, 2012

  • AlistairKelman

Can someone get Mark to e-mail directly? The event needs to be booked in by the Organiser in the Google Campus system for it to go ahead. Mark is the Organiser but I do not have an e-mail for him and he has not been in contact via the Meetup site. So as a matter of Urgency can someone put me in contact with him so that I can put him contact with the correct people here at Google Campus.

Just checked my calendar, I've got no exams on the 16th - so I'm good to go! I've got a raspberry pi - if anyone wants to try and run some stuff on it, feel free to bring in an image on an SD card.

Do they have networking equipment for us to hook our RPi's up to, or do we need to bring in some switches?

    May 3, 2012

  • Mark O.

OK Gang, in the absence of any dissenters :) I’ve moved the date to the 15th and we’ll meetup at the impressive Google campus – Thanks to Alistair for Organising! Would like some shout outs for any topics you’d like covered – perhaps you’d like a workshop for installing the OS, some programming help, or a show and tell to give airtime to your latest RPi creation?? Get thinking! Anyways, hope it hasn’t messed with your diaries, and look forward to meeting you all!

Yes - I spoke to the MD of Central Working today and he would be happy to host us on that night. The address is in Shoreditch not their branch in Bloomsbury. It is:
    4-5 BONHILL STREET
    LONDON EC2A 4BX
    Nearest tube is Old Street
You can see what the place is like by this link:

  • Mark O.

Haha Ben, we can't be seen to be encouraging that sort of behaviour :)) Nobody seems to have an opinion on the date - so I guess if by tomorrow evening there's no strong objection to moving it to the 15th at the Google Campus (Camden), then we'll proceed then - Alistair will that still be OK do you think?

Hi, I've got my RPi :) haha, yeah I might get away with getting in to a pub, but officially...

    April 30, 2012

  • AlistairKelman

Looking at our membership we have some people coming who are just taking their GCSEs. That probably puts them below drinking age. So to keep everything aimed in the right way let's avoid a pub based meeting.

    April 30, 2012

  • AlistairKelman

I am assuming that *some* of us will have a RasPi by the date of the meeting - is anyone said that they are coming who already has one? There is not much point in having our meet up until we actually have a couple to show to each other.

I don't have it yet :-) It would help if the participants amend their RSVP indicating if they have it or not (doing it myself now...)

    April 30, 2012

  • Mark O.

Hey Guys, have not confirmed the meetup yet due to the uncertainty over deliveries, CE testing etc. Now things are looking more concrete I am going to confirm a venue. I thought the pub would be a nice place to keep it nice and social - is there anyone joining who can't get in a pub? I've also fired off a mail to the google campus. I'd rather keep the date or move it several weeks back due to people's schedules. Am happy to be led by the group though, so holler if you have a preference!

    April 30, 2012

  • AlistairKelman

I agree about the problem of moving the date but since a venue has still to be selected AND it is over two weeks away this should be doable. So Mark, as the organiser can we have a quick decision please. Google Campus is a cool place to meet - George Osborne opened the place just a few weeks ago: http://ow.ly/i/xjiI#1hMr

People showing interest and publishing their picture regrettably seem to be of an age in which entering a pub should be a non issue :-)

Most problematic thing for me (I suppose for many participants) is the date: if it is moved with short notice it may throw many personal calendars into disarray. As for location many libraries charge nominal fees to rent spaces, but WiFi may be an issue, Dragon Hall in Covent Garden, has rooms which cost could be covered by 2 qid/head or thereabouts.

    April 30, 2012

  • AlistairKelman

Might I suggest that we don't meet in a pub. Meeting in a pub could be difficult for our younger members and we want to encourage them to participate. Good free WiFi is going to be important too.

    April 30, 2012

  • AlistairKelman

OK - if the meeting can be switched to Tuesday 15th May at 19.00 then Central Working at Google Campus in Shoreditch could host this. http://www.campuslondon.com/ They cannot on Thursday 17th because this clashes with an existing event.

I presume you're all familiar with this sub-reddit, but in case:
    http://www.reddit.com/r/raspber...
There's many a discussion going on over there re the RP.

As for pubs... there's a large space in Doggetts Coat and Badge, at the south end of Blackfriars Bridge (the PHP London meetup happens there; btw, found the guinness there not so good), also there's The Square Pig, Holborn. (London Drupal Pub Meet use that space, not been there yet). Note my slack copy/paste skillz.

Wow! Welcome Pi Faces :~) I wasn't sure if the group would take off, so this is nice!

OK, I hear you about the weekend, I'll move it to 19.30, Thurs 17th, cool? Venue wise, I take it we're all quite central? I'm in Temple so can get most places pretty easy. There's also a facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/#!/page...]) as it's a better as a forum than meetup.

OK all, have a great week and if you have a preference for venue, please shout here!
