Updates.

We are very pleased that the following distinguished traders (subject to possible last minute changes) will be taking part in our discussions on Wednesday at Bloomberg European HQ. Start time for this event is 18H00 for 18H30.

Also please note that the security entrance team at Bloomberg have strict entry policies (our debate will be just below their television studios). Could you therefore please message Jeremy Sosabowski (co-organizer at LST) with the following details (including all your guests) : Full name, employer details (i.e. name of company or details such as independent trader, freelance consultant etc...), position within company and contact details (such as an email address). It is very very likely that you will be required to validate these details on arrival.

Biographies of the panelists:

Mike Beaver has 20+ years of solid hands on trading experience including intra day prop. trading experience, equity research analyst roles as well as his initial fixed income floor trading experience in Australia. He currently trades as an independent prop. trader focusing on most asset classes including fixed income, equities (including indices), commodities and some FX. His trading decisions are based on macro economic trends including shorter term news announcements.

Rishi Gohill has nearly a decade of hands on investment, trading and research experience gained throughout his numerous roles as a prop. trader (intraday strategies), structured fund manager, credit researcher and investment analyst. He is currently running Gohill Trading Company a proprietary quantitative trading fund (FX and fixed income futures). His speciality is trend following strategies based on solid quantitative R&D.

Rob Tratt of Atlas JNF has been trading the financial markets since shortly after graduating with a BSc in Economics in 1999. Having started trading futures in January 2001, he has been trading his own account since March 2002. After attending a Larry Williams seminar in 2005, Rob began researching and creating his own innovative trading systems, many of which he has profitably traded over several years. Rob uses a selection of systematic trading strategies for his growing client base including intraday mean reverting systems applied to the
futures markets.

Trading strategies panel discussion.

Fellow systematic traders, first and foremost a very happy 2014!

Our next LST event will be a panel discussion about different types of trading strategies.  More specifically we will be looking at the pros & cons and the advantages and disadvantages of different types of trading 'philosophies' such as mean reversion, trend following and more discretionary trading styles.

Our 3 panellists – subject to final confirmation - have multiple decades of hands on trading experience (systematic and discretionary) and as usual audience participation will be highly encouraged.

We are also very pleased to announce that this event is organised in conjunction with our venue partners Bloomberg L.P. and that it will therefore take place at their City Gate House venue (Finsbury Square). As always we are looking forward to some very good discussion with good audience participation at this inaugural 2014 LST event. Please do RSVP accordingly.

Random question, my fellow mechanistas: reality or urban myth? At big hedge fund, a programmer is testing out a new algorithm but accidentally enters the live account number instead of the sim account. Only after several hours of thrashing the algorithm does it become apparent that billions of real $$$ have been lost and the firm goes under. Can't find anything on google.

@p3xdnr, yes absolutely control & procedures especially when deploying to production.
I remember very clearly at the time how the popular media was blaming the “algos” when in fact this was simply a lack of proper methodologies (or possibly a bit more than that....)

Although all the speakers were extremely knowledgeable and interesting in their own right, I felt that the discussion drifted a little too far away from algorithmic trading towards discretionary trade decision making. I would prefer to see the focus of the group remain squarely upon algo philosophy and techniques, especially as LST is uniquely positioned in this space.
