October meetup

  • Oct 15, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

After a short hiatus, we're back to our regular programming!

We're on a Tuesday this time, hopefully we'll help to inspire you for the rest of the week (and maybe cause a slightly less productive Wednesday morning!).

We have some great talks lined up:

"Tips, tools & techniques for making a living from
WordPress (from someone who actually does)"

by Simon Dickson

Code for the People co-founder Simon Dickson will talk a bit about the development of the UK ecosystem, the interplay between freelancers & agencies, and the variable concept of WordPress 'expertise'.

"Review of multilingual plugins for WP" by Jevgenijs Сernihoviсs

Lightning talks:

"Towards an Alternate Theme Structure?" by Graham Armfield

In theory, child themes save you a lot of work. But not if you have to change lots of files for the child theme. Here's an idea for an alternate theme structure that may overcome that.

"I feel the need... the need for speed" by Darren Grant

"The Heartbeat API" by Richard Long

With the launch of WordPress 3.6 comes the Heartbeat API, a simple yet powerful way of implementing a polling in WordPress. We'll take a look at the basics, an example and the possibilities.

"My first plugin" by Pat Lockley

A guide to playing with content using a filter.

"Title TBC" by Joe Root

Understanding reader's interests and appropriately tailoring your Wordpress homepage for them.

See you there!

Keith

Hey all. We've built a chrome extension which uses the tech I was discussing to recommend personalised Sport content on sites like the BBC and The Guardian. You can download it here: http://sixyards.co/

Let me know what you all think. It would be great to get feedback!

The videos of last week's talks are now online here: http://www.youtube.com/user/WordPressLondon.

Thanks to Graham Armfield for recording and uploading them.

Speakers, if you want me to edit the descriptions, please send me the required text.

Issue with youtube, most report that the video is not currently available, (however Simon Dickinson does play) random attempts over 3 days, regards Terry

      Thanks again Darren, very informative

Great range of topics, although most of it was quite beyond my current WP knowledge. Format of lightening talks are great too. Was wondering if some beginner / fundamental topics could be covered? ie. multisite vs single install, backing up / exporting dbs, how to code a custom layout.

This meetup marked my first year with the group and it was one of the best. Lots of interesting talks and people.

I actually bumped into Fernando, who I haven't seen in years.

Btw, any news about the slide of 'pimp you htaccess'?

Will we have a meetup in Nov before the WordCamp?

Thanks Keith for a year full of interesting meetups, look forward to the followings.

Also, I've got the videos from the presentations and I'll be editing and uploading them to YouTube as soon as poss - but I'm a bit busy this week.

Slides from my presentation at http://www.slideshare.net/simondickson/simon-dickson-at-wordpress-london-15-oct-2013 - although they probably don't make much sense without me talking over the top of them.

Just out of interest, do we need to be there by 630 or would 7pm be acceptable - i.e. when does the first talk start?

    October 15, 2013

    • Adam M.

Pizza? I'll do my best to get there for 630 then ;)

      1 · October 15, 2013

    • Adam M.

Grrr, I'm destined to never make one of these meetups, I'm stuck in the office until late now. Enjoy the pizza and I'm going to clear my calendar completely next time, block it out in fact so I'll be there next time.

I like the idea of lightning talks, happy to pull one out of a hat. How about "how I made an almost-text-only WordPress site more interesting using Icon Fonts, because the client provided no images and I was bored".

    2 · October 1, 2013
