Alex Mendham's dance orchestra is one of the best 1930s style dance orchestras I have heard. He played recently at a Swing event in South Bank. It is an eleven piece orchestra of skilled musicians. They will be playing at the Floridita club (formerly The Marquee Club) and I was told by their management that there is a 25 m2 dance floor. Tickets are only £10 but one is, I suspect, obliged to eat, but the food looks reasonably priced (six tapas dishes for two people £30).
Alex's music is mainly suitable for quicksteps, but also foxtrots, jive, swing, and the odd waltz and rumba. I have booked a table for three at 8 pm. The first band, called Trio Manouche, do Django Reinhardt covers, and will play until 9.15 pm. Alex's orchestra will play from 9.30 pm to midnight. It would be nice if a few ballroom and swing dancers other than me and my wife and frend turn up. Phone[masked] to speak to the Floridita and make a booking
