I've recently been thinking that it's often the case that when old friends get together, it can be a bit difficult to move the conversation beyond catching up on the latest' or reminiscing about last year's skiing holiday (to draw from a conversation I was having at last night's gathering). Even though this intimacy is part of what's great about catching up with friends, I'd love to get into discussions on a more regular basis about things a bit bigger than 'the gang'! What do you think? With pubs and restaurants being noisy places, I'd love to meet - and provide others with the opportunity to do the same - a bunch of people who I might at some point invite back to mine* for a bit of a 'Come Dine With Me' (but without the banal conversation and emotionally unintelligent guests). Over home cooked food, lovely wine - should the mood take us - and an informal atmosphere we can chat to our heart's content. In the meantime, let's find London's hidden pubs 'of calm and character' and enjoy good conversation whilst getting to know eachother.

If you like the idea of discussing any of the following questions, or indeed anything that draws on current affairs, politics, philosophy, the environment or anything else of the moment then let's get together.

  • Does our modern day digitised music culture make us self-involved?
  • What does it mean to be a 'good' person?
  • Should countries intervene in other countries' affairs?
  • What is art?
  • Does a politician's personality matter?
  • Should advertising be banned?
  • How can we acknowledge the value of the woman as childbearer?
  • How important is a country's identity to its citizens?

This group is mainly for 27 - 40 year olds who are established in London or setting up here for the long-haul (though if you're outside this bracket no matter). If you're open- and independent-minded, rampantly curious and know how to laugh (let's not let political differences put us off our food) then do get in touch.

*This is the grand plan but in the meantime the pub will be our host (and security ;-)
