'Charlie Chaplin' Guided Walk

Come along on Saturday 20th April at either 12:30pm or 3:00pm for a guided walk around Kennington on the early life of the comic genius; Charlie Chaplin!

I'm a massive fan of Charlie Chaplin, so I'll be the guide for the walk.

About the walk
Charlie Chaplin was British and kept British citizenship all his life, even though he spent most of his adult life in America.

He was born in Kennington, London on the 16th April 1889 and lived their until he was 21.  He was born into and spent his early years in great poverty in (at the time) one of the poorest areas of London.  He joined a performing group and during a tour of the U.S was spotted performing by a scout for Sennett Studios, they signed him up and the rest is history! He went on to star in 81 films mainly during the silent era and playing his 'Little Tramp' character in most of them.

His life is a classic rags to riches story and in his films he was heavily influenced by his poor upbringing.  I will guide you round the streets visiting various places that influenced him, the houses where he lived as a child and describing the conditions of the area in late Victorian London.  I will tell you the story of his relationships with his mentally ill mother, alcoholic father and the close bond he had with his half brother Sydney.  Plus I will also talk about his stage understudy who also went onto become a world famous movie comedian.

I will finish the walk showing you the place where he learnt his famous comedy walk!

The walk is free to Full Members of the group, but £5 for everyone else.

The walk will last about 1h 45mins and we will end by going to a pub not far from Vauxhall Tube Station.  Please indicate when you RSVP, whether you want to attend the 12:30pm walk or the 3:00pm walk.

If you can't see us at the station, please call.

Hope to see you there!

Regards

Robert

I should not have read these glowing reviews of the Chaplin walk. It makes me all the more envious I was not there. I live in St. Louis, Mo/USA, and am a major fan of Sir Charles. In fact, I threw a birthday party for him on the 16th, 22 people, watched some of his Mutual shorts, sang happy birthday to him. Your walk with Robert is something I must do someday and I should plan my trip to London for that reason. Glad you all enjoyed it.

You're right, Cindy. The party was fun. The Chaplin Walk, however, was so special - such a sense of history at your fingertips. I need to buy a piggy bank.

Yes - I also really enjoyed this walk, - quite a unique one! It was really interesting - so much I hadn't known about Charlie Chaplin - thanks Robert for a very enjoyable and informative walk and to all those on the earlier walk for their decent company.

Very interesting to see area where Chaplin and also my great-grandparents lived. Unfortunately we didn't end up in Hollywood but you never know! Well researched Robert.

Wonderful walk! I learned so much which I didn't know & loved seeing another part of London from a new perspective... It was great to see Robert in his "Little Tramp" costume & always a pleasure to hear him speak about a new subject with his usual, well informed style! Lovely weather was a bonus!

Fascinating walk and enjoyed learning about one of Britain's greatest national treasures who was lucky enough to escape the awful deprivation of his early life but never forgot his roots or his political priniples!!!

Excellent. A thoroughly enjoyable walk which gave good insight into the terrible conditions that existed in London at the time of Charlie Chaplin's childhood. I liked Robert's Charlie Chaplin outfit.

Please come along at your preferred time (12:30pm or 3pm) for the walk. The system defaults to the start time of the meetup, rather than your chosen time (I can't change this).

Sorry for late cancellation - I've just learned that there will be engineering works in my area and no trains to London. Although there will be replacement buses, it will make the journey very time consuming, and difficult - especially coming home!

  • Pili

    Hello Robert,

I would also like to change my time to 3 pm. Regards,

Wish I could do the walk with you, but I'm far away, in St. Louis, Missouri. To celebrate Charlie's birthday, however, I've lowered the price of my novel about Charlie, It's "Shadow and Substance: My Time with Charlie Chaplin." On Kindle. Only $2.99 for April. The novel got a wonderful review from one of your neighbors, Kevin Brownlow. It's on Amazon. I'll be with you in spirit on Saturday. I hope the weather is pleasant.

    Hi Robert.
I'd like to come but have been placed on the waiting list. I asked for the 3pm slot but the acknowledgement email indicates that I opted for 12.30pm. I can only make it for 3pm.
