'Hidden Courtyards of Fleet Street' Guided Walk

  • January 18, 2014 · 1:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Come along on Saturday 18th January at either 1:45pm, 2:00pm or 2:15pm for a guided walk around the hidden courtyards of Fleet Street!

We have 3 guides and we will be starting the walk in 15 minute gaps, so please indicate which time/guide you wish to go with when you RSVP.  If you've never attended before, all three guides are extremely good and qualified Blue Badge Guides, so just choose a random time (when you RSVP it may come up as 1:45pm for the time to attend, but just ignore that and just come along at your chosen time).

About the walk

Fleet Street takes its name from the River Fleet, London's largest underground river.  It was the home of British national newspapers until the 1980s. Even though the last major British news office, Reuters, left in 2005, the term Fleet Street continues to be used as a metonym for the British national press.

It sits just outside the walls of the City of London and the area off Fleet Street was used as a burial ground in Roman times.  From the 13th century, it was used as the main road link connecting the City and the expanding political hub of Westminster.

We will walk through the heart of what was once the centre of the nation’s newspaper industry and hear about the colourful characters who lived here.  Samuel Pepys, Dr Johnson, Samuel Richardson Edgar Wallace and the colourful Sweeney Todd are all encountered on this tour.

The walk is a private walk for the group, we will split into 3 groups and we will be guided by Colin Street (1:45pm), Rachel Kolsky (2:00pm) and Diane Burstein (2:15pm).  It will last about 2 hours.

The cost for the guides is £7 per person for Full Member's of the group and £9 per person for non-Members. (payable on the day).

Afterwards we will be heading the Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub, 145 Fleet Street (which dates back to 1667) for a chat over a drink.

If you can't see us outside the station, please call.

Hope to see you there!

Robert

Sorry to have missed the tour. I arrived a few minutes late for the 1:45pm meeting and I have just now seen that I could have waited for the next one....

Really enjoyed Fleet street walk and so glad I came as was nearly going to stay home and revise for the quiz -which verged on the fiendishly difficult !
Very good guide Diane as ever and lots of interesting new info

I agree with Flavia. We were in Colin's group and although his knowledge couldn't be faulted I did have a couple of issues. Firstly, he walked at such a cracking pace we struggled to keep up with him (we don't have any mobility problems). If it hadn't been for a gentleman in our group wearing a very brightly coloured jacket that we could pick out from a distance he would have lost us in the first 15 minutes. Secondly, he didn't take a head count so if anyone had lost the group Colin wouldn't have known.

Exactly what we thought the tour would entail and with a bubbly guide. Great afternoon and, for once, it stopped raining! Thanks to Robert and Rachel.

Well, I enjoyed the walk immensely. I thought Colin was very good and showed me many nooks and crannies I never knew existed. I'm Sweeney Todd the barber and wicked thoughts I harbour being one of them!

Sorry to have missed this & quiz too. Could not be certain of getting back tonight. As it happens, replacement buses were ordered but long waits meant journey could take up to5 hrs. Added problem: poor soul hit by a train causing cancelations & more diversions.

Couldn't hear anything a lot of the time (traffic etc). Some points of interest and enthusiastic guide but not the best value for money tour. Difference in the price paid £9 to what was (If I'm not mistaken) put on the website £7?
