Come along on Saturday 18th January at either 1:45pm, 2:00pm or 2:15pm for a guided walk around the hidden courtyards of Fleet Street!
We have 3 guides and we will be starting the walk in 15 minute gaps, so please indicate which time/guide you wish to go with when you RSVP. If you've never attended before, all three guides are extremely good and qualified Blue Badge Guides, so just choose a random time (when you RSVP it may come up as 1:45pm for the time to attend, but just ignore that and just come along at your chosen time).
About the walk
Fleet Street takes its name from the River Fleet, London's largest underground river. It was the home of British national newspapers until the 1980s. Even though the last major British news office, Reuters, left in 2005, the term Fleet Street continues to be used as a metonym for the British national press.
It sits just outside the walls of the City of London and the area off Fleet Street was used as a burial ground in Roman times. From the 13th century, it was used as the main road link connecting the City and the expanding political hub of Westminster.
We will walk through the heart of what was once the centre of the nation’s newspaper industry and hear about the colourful characters who lived here. Samuel Pepys, Dr Johnson, Samuel Richardson Edgar Wallace and the colourful Sweeney Todd are all encountered on this tour.
The walk is a private walk for the group, we will split into 3 groups and we will be guided by Colin Street (1:45pm), Rachel Kolsky (2:00pm) and Diane Burstein (2:15pm). It will last about 2 hours.
The cost for the guides is £7 per person for Full Member's of the group and £9 per person for non-Members. (payable on the day).
Afterwards we will be heading the Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub, 145 Fleet Street (which dates back to 1667) for a chat over a drink.
If you can't see us outside the station, please call.
Hope to see you there!
