'Pugilism, Puppets & a People's Park' - Historic Bethnal Green Guided Walk

  • February 15, 2014 · 1:45 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Come along on Saturday 15th February at either 1:45pm, 2:00pm or 2:15pm for a guided walk around historic Bethnal Green!

We have 3 guides and we will be starting the walk in 15 minute gaps, so please indicate which time/guide you wish to go with when you RSVP.  If you've never attended before, all three guides are extremely good and qualified Blue Badge Guides, so just choose a random time (when you RSVP it may come up as 1:45pm for the time to attend, but just ignore that and just come along at your chosen time).

About the walk

People have been living in Bethnal Green since Anglo Saxon times, when it was called 'Blythenhale', which translates to 'happy corner/nook'.  The area was largely marshland and forest until the 16th century, and the settlements dependence upon water suggests that the 'happy corner' was cleared next to the natural spring (St Winifreds Well in Conduit Field).

On the walk we will see the home of a a famous 18th century champion boxer, take a peek at a treasure trove of children's toys, admire the old town hall which is now a luxury hotel and walk down a street of delightful Victorian houses en route to the attractive Victoria Park. London's first "peoples' park."

As we stroll through the park with its lake and canal you'll hear how it has hosted protests, rock concerts, boating and leisure pursuits.  We will view the recently reinstated lakeside Chinese Pagoda which was a favourite of the Victorians.

The walk is a private walk for the group, we will split into 3 groups and we will be guided by Rachel (1:45pm), Val (2:00pm) and Diane Burstein (2:15pm).  It will last about 2 hours.

The cost for the guides is £7 per person for Full Member's of the group and £9 per person for non-Members. (payable on the day).

Afterwards we will head to The Approach Tavern, 47 Approach Road for a chat over a drink.

If you can't see us outside the station, please call.

Hope to see you there!

Robert

I went on the walk with Rachel who showed us some fantastic hilarious boxing moves, enjoyed by all. It was a great walk on a cold day. Guiding is not an easy job, speaking from experience, and you have to appeal to such a varied audience. I think the two guides I have so far been entertained and educated by, are fantastic. It can be so demoralising if people come with fixed ideas of what should be covered in just two hours. (Have a look at the Blue badge training website - expensive course and very demanding, you have to lean about the whole of London, orientating people, and then some). I talk about art on my tours but I can always learn more, and do, on gallery and museum visits and talks.

Thanks Robert and the guides, too.

Eleanor (and Karl) Marx and Annie Besant figured in the Historic Clerkenwell walk in December. Some places are have so many associations with people and movements that to mention them all would be like reading a shopping list! The Hammersmith coffee evening will be held near a public house called the William Morris, because of his long association with that area. The pub walls are covered with references to Morris, and other "locals" such as Gustav Holst.

The extra information is indeed appreciated, but a more tactful approach would go down a whole lot better!

The Krays boxing history was mentioned on our tour, not every guide will mention the same facts I,m sure.they certainly seemed very knowledgable to me.

Diane did a fantastic job. As others have said, there is only so much information that can be imparted in 2 hours. If anyone has any greater knowledge than guides such as Diane, these events are probably not for them.

Very interesting to hear about the monument to tube st disaster and boxing history of area which has a lot of character. Good local pub with plenty of space for conversation. Victoria Park and Regents canal will be great for a summer walk.

Hello Robert. Just seen that the Northern Line tube isn't running, so am going to postpone my meetup walk, shame. I just know from experience that the journey is painfully long otherwise. Another time I hope!

Bethnal Green Tube Station has many exits, so make sure you come out of the 'Roman Road/Bethnal Green Library' exit and we will be just inside the park near the memorial.

Blythenhale seems such a good name..why did they change it?

    January 24, 2014

    • Robert

Don't think it's name changed, it's just evolved over time with the English language.

      1 · January 24, 2014

Love the English language. Have studied Old, Middle & Modern ... old looks so foreign ... until you read it out loud!
