'Secrets of the Strand' Guided Walk

  • This location is shown only to members

Come along on Saturday 21st June at either 1:45pm, 2:00pm or 2:15pm for a guided walk around the historic Strand!

We have 3 guides and we will be starting the walk in 15 minute gaps, so please indicate which time/guide you wish to go with when you RSVP.  If you've never attended before, all three guides are extremely good and qualified Blue Badge Guides, so just choose a random time (when you RSVP it may come up as 1:45pm for the time to attend, but just ignore that and just come along at your chosen time).

About the walk

The word 'Strand' is formed from the Old English word meaning shore. Initially it referred to the shallow bank of the once much wider River Thames, before the construction of the Victoria Embankment. The name was later applied to the road itself. Part of its length was known in the 13th century as 'Densemanestret' or 'street of the Danes', referring to the community of Danes in the area.

The Strand is one of London's main thoroughfares, but this walk looks at some of the courtyards, buildings and secret places behind this famous street.  We will see a little known chapel, a hidden archway which inspired Dickens, a 'Roman Bath', a 17th century Watergate and a 'ghost station.

We'll also walk through the elegant courtyard of Somerset House following in the footsteps of royals, sailors, artists, musicians, actors and skaters.  The walk always surprises people who thought they knew this area!

The walk is a private walk for the group, we will split into 3 groups and we will be guided by Val (1:45pm), Diane (2:00pm) and Rachel (2:15pm).  It will last about 2 hours.

Cost for the guided walk is £7 per person for Full Member's of the group and £9 per person for non-Members. (payable on the day).

Afterwards we will head to The George pub, 213 Strand for a chat over a drink.

If you can't see us outside the station, please call.

Hope to see you there!

Very interesting. I know this part of London fairly well but never knew the history and development behind it. A lovely ambling pace to accommodate the heat of the afternoon too.
