Come along on Saturday 19th July at either 1:45pm, 2:00pm or 2:15pm for a guided walk around the historic Wimbledon!
We have 3 guides and we will be starting the walk in 15 minute gaps, so please indicate which time/guide you wish to go with when you RSVP. If you've never attended before, all three guides are extremely good and qualified Blue Badge Guides, so just choose a random time (when you RSVP it may come up as 1:45pm for the time to attend, but just ignore that and just come along at your chosen time).
About the walk
Wimbledon has been inhabited since at least the Iron Age when the hill fort on Wimbledon Common is thought to have been constructed. In 1087 when the Domesday Book was compiled, Wimbledon was part of the manor of Mortlake.
The ownership of the manor of Wimbledon changed between various wealthy families many times during its history, and the area also attracted other wealthy families who built large houses such as Eagle House, Wimbledon House and Warren House. The village developed with a stable rural population coexisting alongside nobility and wealthy merchants from the city.
There's more to Wimbledon than tennis and the Wombles! Explore this lively hilltop village with its many cafes, pubs and boutiques.
We will visit historic St Mary's church and discover the tomb of the man who made London a more fragrant city. Admire the historic houses around Wimbledon Common and learn of some eccentric past residents.
The walk is a private walk for the group, we will split into 3 groups and we will be guided by Val (1:45pm), Rachel (2:00pm) and Diane Burstein (2:15pm). It will last about 2 hours.
Cost for the guided walk is £7 per person for Full Member's of the group and £9 per person for non-Members. (payable on the day).
Afterwards we will head to the Crooked Billet pub, 14-15 Crooked Billet for a chat over a drink.
If you can't see us outside the station, please call.
Hope to see you there!
