Well, Rupert Brooke was a young man who fancied a bit of a break and here's a review he wrote of Grantchester in 1912. http://www.orchard-gr... ... OK give the bloke a chance, he was probably the Tracey Emin of his day and Grantchester was his Margate.

We're going to explore all around the Backs, which is the back of the colleges in Cambridge University where stunning gardens run down to the river. Very beautiful! Cambridge is an unusual place... you can walk a few metres from a brand name high street to find cows wandering around in meadows right in the centre of town! We'll do that and check out the mathematical bridge and all the other wonders. We can stop for lunch in a pub (maybe down by the Mill pond) and walk out of town to the village of Grantchester for afternoon tea in the Orchard http://www.orchard-gr...

Meet me at 9.15 sharp in front of the main train times board in the middle of London Kings Cross Station (overland). I will wear a green scarf of mine diagonally across, like a sash. Don't worry, I won't wear it like that all day.

  • Distance: Around 6 miles.
  • Route: Cambridge station > the Backs > Market Square > Newnham > Grantchester > Cambridge station.
  • Terrain: Mostly flat (unless we nip up Castle Hill) with town, country, river, meadows and an orchard.
  • Cost: £29 Please pay using the Paypal link at the top.
Sorry, RSVPs will be deleted if you forget to pay!
  • Price includes: Return train from London Kings Cross to Cambridge & the walk around all the Backs and to Granchester.
Price doesn't include: Food and drink: but I will be asking the tea room and anyone else I can think of if we can get discounts for our group for food.
  • To bring:

    Water
Food - in case you suddenly get hungry
    Walking shoes
    Rain proof clothing
Sun protection clothing and / or sun cream
Mobile phone if you have one

Bring your cozzy if you fancy a dip in Byron's pool and a spare set of cufflinks or a tiara in case we get a chance to gatecrash a May Ball. Only joking - the security's really tight and swimming would be at your own risk!

In fact please mind where you put your feet on the walk and look after yourself - there may be mud, broken branches, nettles, grass snakes and other English jungly things to look out for.

In relation to Alison's comments, I just want everyone to rest assured that I would not take payment twice from anyone, and if this happened by mistake I would give an immediate refund. Thanks.

Enjoyed meeting a very intelligent and lively bunch of people. One lady came all the way from Paris for the day which is pretty impressive!
