Board Games on Sunday

Every week, London-on-Board hits The Old Star pub in Westminster for a few pints, some good pub grub, and of course, lots and lots of board games.

We're immediately across the road from St. James' Park tube station, so it really can't get more convenient, and we're normally there for 9 solid hours of gaming goodness!!!

Newbies especially welcome and if you get there at 11:00 a.m. prompt, you're most likely to not have to wait around to hop into a game straight-away.

RSVP's will open up for this meetup approximately two weeks before the event.

Special Note: If you're a gamer visiting London from abroad, and would like to attend one of our meetups, send a message to one of the organisers (Jeff or Martin) with the dates you are in London and we'll make sure you get a slot at one of our upcoming events.

45 rsvps, 26 on the waiting list (fri night) and just 31 show up. Something needs to change.

Also, I should add that there's been so much discussion about all of this that I'm not sure anymore discussion is going to lead anywhere. The organisers and active members have spent a lot of time thinking about things and trying to find a good solution, so there isn't going to be a magical solution that hasn't been thought of already and considered. The options I can see are:

1- do nothing and stay as is. 2 - Find a bigger venue (not realistic perhaps). 3 - Start moving downstairs and using all available space in the Old Star to increase the capacity. 4 - Have a standby pub nearby for weeks when the limit is high (players can move back to the Old Star if not busy). 5 - keep an attendee list and split up the extra admin load between organisers. There are surely some others that members/organisers have discussed already. But in order to put an end to this cycle of discussion I think the organisers should vote on their preferred choice and then let everyone know.

This was my first visit and I liked the atmosphere at the venue. I played 3 games (BSG, Kingsberg and Power Grid) and I enjoyed all three although it was a shame that Power Grid had to be cut off mid-game as the pub was closing. I saw a lot of other fascinating looking games. I had a good gaming session with great people and I will definitely be back for more.

Sorry but i got to be promoted to the partecipants list yesterday around midnight and i had already plans. See you next time guys and happy playing!

@Cyrus: i tried to change the rsvp but as the event was already started it was not possible.

      1 · September 9, 2013

    • Alex

@Jon, ideally it is a "not nice" move to change the rsvp within 24 hrs from the event, as people on waiting list could not be able to change the rsvp as me. I would really have had the chance to come -will be for the next time. As I said, I received the change status Saturday around 23:30/midnight while i was not "online" so apologies if modifying the rsvp on meetup site has not been my first thought in that time.

This was my first go. Thanks to those of you who were kind enough to explain the games etc especially Timo who is very patient. Enjoyed the game we played and hope to return for a rematch. Sorry I had to leave early on this occasion. Jx

Ack -- is there any point in turning up in a few hours or should I give the space to someone on the waiting list who can turn up earlier?

    • Timo H.

LOL, (almost) the same here! I knew I'm "in"... but will only get a few hours of sleep as well (hence my selection of light games...). Ah well... nothing a coffee or two or three cannot fix...

    • Cyrus T.

    September 7, 2013

    • Timo H.

I will bring a selection of light to medium games for the "Host Table".
Beginners and newbies welcome! (as always)
      In the bags:
Endeavor, Small World (+ expansions), Robo Rally, Castles of Burgundy, Carcassonne (+2 expansions), RA, and Viking Fury.
If you are interested in any of these let me know.

      September 8, 2013

    • Cyrus T.

I would like to play Carcassonne especially which I also have not played before :)

      September 8, 2013

  • Cyrus T.

I have only been to a couple of the meetups thus far and have thoroughly enjoyed them but I have also noticed thrice now other newbies silent as more popular members point them out for their failings at a game. Perhaps some of us could be a little more gentle with newbies' feelings..?

    12 to the door.. will I? won't I?

    September 7, 2013

  • Cyrus T.

Would it be fair (to the group organisers) to ask if anyone on the waiting list would like to meet elsewhere to play games since there are now 24 of us, that is, assuming any of us have games to play..?

    2 · September 7, 2013

    • James

I'm up for that and can recommend a good pub in waterloo

      September 7, 2013

  • James

Since there are so many on the waiting list, is there any merit in having a second smaller session somewhere else?

    September 6, 2013

    • Ronan

We have looked at lots of alternatives James. Check out the Discussions area for some of the opinions which have been mooted. Splitting the group has mostly been rejected as it goes against what we are really here to do but by all means chip in. Let's see how long the list is on Sunday afternoon.

      1 · September 6, 2013

  • Tim K.

Would anyone like to play Game of Thrones? I've both expansions and am willing to teach.

    1 · September 3, 2013

    • Jon F.

Assuming I get in (and you still have space) I'd like to play with the new expansion

      September 4, 2013

    • Aldo

I am interested. Assuming I will get out of the wait list I would like to play.
