Board Games on Saturday

Every week, London-on-Board hits The Old Star pub in Westminster for a few pints, some good pub grub, and of course, lots and lots of board games.

We're immediately across the road from St. James' Park tube station, so it really can't get more convenient, and we're normally there for 9 solid hours of gaming goodness!!!

Newbies especially welcome and if you get there at 11:00 a.m. prompt, you're most likely to not have to wait around to hop into a game straight-away.

RSVP's for all weekend events open up approximately two weeks before the event itself.

Special Note: If you're a gamer visiting London from abroad, and would like to attend one of our meetups, send a message to one of the organisers (Jeff or Martin) with the dates you are in London and we'll make sure you get a slot at one of our upcoming events.

Did someone leave their headphones? I have them and am coming tomorrow...

Hey Jon - sorry to disappoint, they're not my headphones. Just wanted to ask you: what the name of that game was that you mentioned to me? Hidden roles but with equipment and such? I might grab it because, as much as I love Avalon, more variety at the end of the night might be nice.

Hi, I'd like to try Android Netrunner, I've watched the intro videos and it looks really intriguing. Is there anyone who could bring it in Saturday and play a couple of games with a newbie? :-)

    October 20, 2013

    • Alessandro M.

Perfect Elliot, we'll see how that goes in a few hours ;-)

Anyone for Eclipse + Expansions? Looks like Will is taken, Jake - how about you?

Eclipse is a space empire building game, which has elements of euro and amerigames (token placement on actions *and* dice). It's very highly rated on boardgamegeek for good reason. We play with the expansions which address some of the issues with the base game in terms of getting boxed in and missiles.

The game is likely to take around 4 hours to play with the optimal 6 players.

Hello. The two us would love to try either Game of Thrones or Galaxy Truckers if anyone is bringing and is willing to teach.

I should be fine to bring this game and to teach it aswell, see you all at 11 tomorrow!

For the Host Table, I will bring the following games. Newcomers always welcome to join!

Lords of Waterdeep + Expansion (up to 6 players)
    http://www.boardgamegeek.com/bo...
An easy to learn and relatively fast to play "worker placement" game with a fantasy theme. Seems to be everybody's darling these days.

Mob Ties (up to 6 players)
    http://www.boardgamegeek.com/bo...
A mobster-themed board game of negotiation and backstabbing. The comic-style artwork on the cards can be quite graphic. Still, my mom likes it, too. Maybe because she gets to have her husband "clipped", and it's all fair game.

If you fancy joining any of these, just reply or send me a message. Or just show up and hope that there is still a seat left for you.

I'd love to play Lords of Waterdeep!

    Also for the Host Table:

Settler of Catan + Expansion (up to 6 players)
    http://www.boardgameg...
Nothing wrong with bringing a modern classic to the table, right? A classic "Euro style" game of settlement building, ressource gathering, and trading. One of the few chances you get to say that you have "wood for sheep" and it's totally OK.

Pathfinder, the card game (up to 6 players)
    http://www.boardgameg...
A cooperative fantasy adventure game in card form.

Cards Against Humanity, UK edition (the more the merrier, but maybe limit it to 10)
    http://www.boardgameg...
The box kinda says it all. "A party game for horrible people." Not a game for the easily offended. Maybe a good game to end the evening. Or to move on to the next pub...

I'd like to play Lords or the Pathfinder card game if anyone else is interested - I'll be there just after 11

    I love gaming!

Would a few people be interested in a newbie-tastic (and friendly) game of 1830: Railways and Robber Barons? Just bought, never played, and excited to give it a try; it's got my bit of Canada on the map and that's cool. Would like to learn without being crushed beneath the cruel heel of cuthroat elites over six painful hours--though one to help with the rules would be pretty awesome.

    October 25, 2013

    • Mike

And apparently I can't make it, anyways! But hopefully we get that game in sometime, Will.

I look forward to it! :D

  • Jen H.

I've just moved to London, and just joined the group. If I tried to RSVP and I'm on the waitlist, does that mean the space is full? Or can I still get in a game or two if I show up at 11?

    Thanks!

    October 24, 2013

    • Jacob T.

You're in :) (there aren't any real rules beyond don't bring your own food and the waiting list which are requirements of the pub. Some turn up at 11am for a 6 hour game, others can only make it at 2pm etc so do what works for you)

      October 25, 2013

    • Jen H.

Thanks! Really looking forward to tomorrow!

Will be coming back from Essen, guess I'll wait till next week.

I'm happy to play anything and am a newcomer. I take it that just means turn up at 11 and see what's availible? I'll be bringing Titanium Wars and Red November if anyone has a crushing desire to play either of them.

    1 · October 23, 2013

    • HammyNotTheHamster

TITANIUM WARS. Mad cravings Sir William. Might be pushed into bringing Cyclades along for the ride too.

Titanium Wars sounds great, count me in

    anyone up for Spartacus?

    October 22, 2013

I might bring it... not sure yet. I will have the Host table, so might go with games that are a bit easier to learn for new gamers.

Coming along for the first time with a friend! Would be really interested to hear what kind of games are around.

    October 22, 2013

    • Shehzad A.

The only game you need to play is avalon. :) lol no there are plenty of games you might not have heard of. Don't worry people go through the rules.

      October 22, 2013

    • Will U.

Since everyone brings their own games, it really depends on who turns up and what they actually bring. I have a few 'newbie friendly' games which I always bring; Carcassonne, ticket to ride and settlers of Catan. But on the bar you'll find a choice of 20-30 games generally covering a huge range of themes, complexity and game length. And you'll usually find someone willing to join you and either help teach the rules or learn with you. Also, if you check in these comments you can often find people trying to arrange games in advance, so jump in if any of them takes your fancy (remember to mention your +1),or just turn up and go with the flow!
