Xmas Shopping (Monday night gaming)

It's that time of year when most of us suddenly realise that we need to get down the shops and buy a few gifts and a large turkey before it is too late. Let recreate this madness at LOB, why not bring your favourite games that allow you to buy, sell and barter your way to success

If you are new to London on Board check out this guide for new players. If you have any questions on the night or are having trouble getting into a game, then look out for the night's host, listed to the right.

If you plan on attending please RSVP. We only have 50 chairs and it gets uncomfortable for everyone if more people than that turn up. Similarly, please change your RSVP to no if it turns out you can't make it.

    Too crowded for me

    • Dan H

How can you rate the night im hosting 1 star :(

      December 11, 2012

    • John B

No tables left to play anything on when I got there Dan. So no games played made it a 1 for me.

Goldland - Interesting exploration, "racing" game. Started out fairly easy and straightforward, but near the end Pouria and I realised we had screwed ourselves over needing to go all the way back to base for required equipment. Need to play it more knowing the different tiles to decide if it is a keeper.
    .....
Infarkt - Always great, literally sick, fun.
    .....
GeistesBlitz - Speed recognition/reaction game - worse than Dobble / Spot It! in every way except for the toy factor. Physical grabbing suckiness of Jungle Speed, and only 5 objects/colours giving experienced players who have internalized these a massive advantage.

So basically what you guys are saying is 'don't play with Lloyd'. This rule applies to so many games...

      December 11, 2012

    • Soren V.

No, "don't play poorly designed speed reaction games with Lloyd or Gabi or anybody else who have played it significantly more than you." Dobble / Spot It! avoids this "internalised memory" problem by having many more objects and by actually having to match them instead of just spotting what is there or not there.

Hi all, first time tonight. My interest has been re-ignited through playing games at my Chinese social e.g. Mahjong, card games like 大老二("Big Two"), Werewolves, and Sanguosha.

As per my profile, first Euro game was Settlers many, many years back, but iOS board-gaming has re-ignited my interest through Ascension [deck-building] and Tigris & Euphrates [Euro].

Happy to play, observe, etc. More interested in strategy games, or people games [BSG, Cosmic Encounter - since I've played Werewolves quite a bit] rather than games where luck plays a large element.

If you are happy for an inexperienced player (in terms of knowledge of the rules), then I'm happy to play. P.s. I'll refrain from mentioning "Bird of Paradise - tap: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool." ;)

Played 2 games of Among The Stars with David and Kate. Derivative of 7 Wonders (never played, reviews), and this was my first drafting game. Enjoyable, but spatial aspect doesn't add a lot of depth. Scoring board is ugly. However, lots of different cards and card types to add, as well as advanced game. Latter didn't add a great deal and a couple of OP choices. Solid 6 (depends on whether you've played 7 wonders).

Played 1 game of Briefcase (light deck building / resource management to create economic engine). Turns spent discarding hand, obstacles are annoying, icon art fiddly to understand, and it feels too drawn out. Ultimately, the mechanisms never really click and there wasn't a sense of theme. A 2 on the BGG scale.

Tribune was first and enjoyed by all (I hope!) - The Royal Poker game, then a Dragon game a little like snakes & ladders which was fun and simple, infattyboomboom was next and I managed to hold onto life (just) for a second place, then the 'ghost & red chair' game. A very enjoyable night, thanks all :)

    December 11, 2012

  • Paul A.

Two new ones for me: Canalmania (got horribly whipped) and Die Speicherstadt (delightly simple)

Amazing night, really well organised and all newbies were given a warm welcome and introduced to some fun games. Everyone left happy having had a fantastic evening

Thanks to you guys who took the plunge and played the totally strategy free game of Le Sourire Du Dragon with me tonight!

    December 11, 2012

  • Rocky

@ Soren - Now you have to pick which players are included, without letting people down or upsetting anyone! Good Luck with that!

Maybe you should host a beer/tobacco party? *tickles chin*

    December 10, 2012

    • Soren V.

I am sure there is time for several games with or without me for everybody.

      December 10, 2012

    • Martin

Damn it, still haven't played :)

      December 11, 2012

1x For sale, 2x ghost panic, 3x cah and guns, 4x love letter = 5 stars from mme!

Sounds like a good '12 days of Christmas'

      December 10, 2012

Pax Porfiriana, Torres and 4 games of Love Letter - quite brilliant, no matter what Soren says :)

I will bring Infarkt again as well as Rheinlander and Goldland - Wolfgang Kramer's exploration game (a la Lost Valley), which I have finally got a copy of - hopefully it is good.

    December 10, 2012

    • Will

      December 10, 2012

Hey guys, we are full up today, so if you can't make it tonight, please change your RSVP to fill up some spots on the waiting list!

    1 · December 10, 2012

As Russell says we are full so if you can not make it pleasee free up your space for someone on the waiting list thanks D

      December 10, 2012

@ Behrooz - If I don't get into the Infarkit or after I've finished I would be more than happy to play :)

    December 10, 2012

  • Behrooz S.

I don't know if this is appropriate, but if I buy a deck of cards on my way over, would anyone be interested to play my game of Wee Van Sank? A very short game of simple arithmetic, probability analysis, bluffs, risks and luck.

    December 10, 2012

    • Behrooz S.

It's vaguely relevant to the christmas theme, because IRL you need to add up prices when buying presents to ensure you have enough money.

May bring along "Le Sourire Du Dragon" (The Dragon's Smile) a French board game (rolling dice and picking cards) based on the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. It's for 2 to 6 players but sadly you can't play Uni the unicorn.

will we be playing games at the events?? or actually shopping?!!! Im confused! :P

    December 5, 2012

    • Martin

Sometimes we have optional themes for the games people bring along - this one is 'shopping and trading'.

      December 5, 2012

    • russell

Shame on you Dan, for such a confusing theme :o)

I'll be in London for this week! If I bring along my copy Briefcase (it has shopping in it... shopping for companies), will there be 1-2 people wanting to play?
