Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans at the BFI

Sunrise is one of the all-time classic silent films. Directed by FW Murnau and released in 1927 it is a visually stunning and haunting fable of human frailty, love, loss and redemption. This screening has the added bonus of being introduced by the rather splendid silent film historian, Kevin Brownlow.

Book soon as there are not too many tickets left!

You can buy tickets here:

https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/Online/default.asp?doWork::WScontent::loadArticle=Load&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::article_id=133737C9-21E3-4BAE-BE2F-2CCAA2995B96&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle:...

The plan is to meet in ticket hall entrance of the BFI next to the library at 6.00pm followed by a drink after the film, somewhere close by.  I'll be wearing a Meetup badge.

I really enjoyed the film, in spite of some reservations about the male/female roles, but then, the film was made in 1927 and I take this into consideration.

In the Lewisham shopping centre I have just seen someone walking like George O'Brian in "Sunrise"!

Thanks for coming everyone. I love the film and it's always good to see it on the big screen. It was great to be able to share views afterwards. I 'm a sucker for the redemption, I confess. The violence, I agree, sits more uncomfortable with a modern audience but I still see the ending as optimistic. And its all so beautifully constructed.

Great spot by Oliva regarding An American Tragedy coming out 3 years before. I must try and find out if it influenced Murnau!

See you all soon I hope

Great film. Not without its flaws (what is?) but very enjoyable. It was also nice to chat with people over a drink afterwards. Thank you for organising, Amran. :)

A fascinating classic, very moving in parts but not without it's flaws and "issues", mainly regarding the continued violence of the potential murderer towards his wife and at the end towards the "city girl". Now, still has a lot of interest, one being the German creative influence (and the english cinematographer Charles Rosher ) on a major Hollywood production, but not as great as some of us thought it was.

Excellent film and nice to see it again after quite a long time. Great to meet fellow silent filmgoers afterwards. Thanks, Amran for organising.

Some bad news folks. I had a quick chat with Kevin Brownlow at an event last night and it seems that he will not be able to introduce this screening after all as he will be at the Bologna film festival. It'll still be great to see Sunrise at the BFI and to meet you all at the inaugural meetup!

Amran, are you related to Leigh Vance, a film producer I met in the early Sixties?

    • Amran V.

Haha. No, although I do remember seeing his name when I was a child on the credits of Cannon in the 70's. I'll tell you the story behind my surname at a meetup. So, some added incentive!

Thanks for the kind words Deirdra. I have thought about doing so for a while but was unsure if there was enough interest. Early signs are very encouraging! I hope to see you at a meetup soon.

Thanks to all the new joiners! I'm really pleased with the initial response. The site only went live yesterday and people seem enthusiastic. See you on 1st July Graceann. It should be a good evening. I'm looking forward to hearing Kevin Brownlow's introduction.

Sorry you cannot make this one Amanda but there will be plenty more to come. If anyone has any suggestions as to possible meetups please do let me know.

You can find listings at the essential Silent London website at this address. Lots to choose from!

I booked as soon as this film was announced as it is a favorite. I'm bringing a girlfriend who has never seen it before.
