July long run: Appleford/Radley to Oxford along the river. 11/6.5 miles

Edit:  Links to runs.  Appleford to Oxford (11 miles): http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/242038483

Radley to Oxford (6.5 miles):  http://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/242049729

Edit:  We're actually going to go to the Isis Tavern, not the Head of the River.  Because the weather looks like it's going to hold and it's a grassier pub.  That reduces the length of the run by a mile, so we'll have to walk a mile into town after lunch.

Edit:  Those who want a shorter run can stay on the train for another stop and get off at Radley, and then run to Oxford from there.  Becca will be hosting the shorter run.  I've plotted a slightly circuitous run that's 6.5 miles long, but it's possible to run about 4.8 miles by taking a more direct route.

------

The long run in July will start from the village of Appleford and go north along the Thames, past the historic town of Abingdon and finish in the ancient city of Oxford, famous for its world-class drinking establishments. The total length will be about 12 miles.  Parts of the route have no road access, so please only sign up if you're confident running this distance.

We will meet by the eponymous statue in Paddington Station at 8:45. Our train leaves at 9:00 and arrives in Appleford at 10:15. We'll then run along the river to Oxford, finishing and having lunch at the Head of the River pub on Folly Bridge.

Afterwards we can do some tourism if people want - I lived in Oxford for many years, so I know the place. I recommend bringing casual clothes if you want to be touristy, as it'll make it easier to get into the colleges.

Trains from Oxford back to Paddington run every half hour well into the evening, and take about 1h15.

Appleford station is on the way to Oxford, so the cheapest train ticket is an off-peak return from London to Oxford, which costs ~£17 with a network railcard or ~£23 without. These tickets are already on sale so you can save time on the morning by buying one in advance.

    Hi LSRs,

I will not be there this Sunday. Enjoy the warm weather. Oxford looks like it will be sunnier than London. And if anyone is up for a pint later in the evening let me know. If not, see you Wednesday.

I'd be down with the shorter route too, if we can. Calf strain still recovering.
Oh, and there's a statue of Paddington Bear in the station?? Excellent... we'll definitely get a group photo there so!!

Hi Matt - I am looking forward to this! given I don't see any other slow runners on the list, I am thinking that -- since I will probably be running alone anyway, perhaps I should start my run a few miles closer in (where is said quaint little town?), or earlier, or...at the least, I should learn the route myself so no one has to wait up or worry about me. ideas?

I'm going to run the route on Sunday to see if it all works (and visit friends in Oxford etc) so I'll let you know afterwards how easy it all looks.

Excellent - thanks much, Matt. there are now a few folks interested in doing the shorter route with me, so I will learn it and be Navigatrix for that group!
