Extremely Successful CEOs: Founder of Innocent Drinks, Richard Reed

THIS IS A PAID EVENT PURCHASE YOUR TICKET HERE

Richard Reed, Innocent Drinks

Richard is the founder of Innocent Drinks, Europe's number 1 smoothie brand.

When Richard and his two co-founders Adam Balon and Jon Wright were thinking about starting a smoothie business, they went to a music festival in London. The trio sold their drinks from a stall and asked people to put their empty bottles in a 'YES' or 'NO' bin. What was the question? They asked people whether they thought the trio should quit their jobs to make smoothies. At the end of the festival the 'YES' bin was full and there were only three cups in the 'NO' bin.

Today Innocent Drinks has over 70% market share in the UK. In 2009 The Coca-Cola Company acquired a minority stake in Innocent Drinks and in 2013 the stake was increased to over 90%.

Innocent Drinks gives 10% of its profits to charity.

Richard is known to have implemented a google-like working atmosphere at Innocent Drinks' offices, where people feel at home. He appeared in several high profile TV shows and documentaries, like the documentary with Peter Jones from Drangon's Den (UK's equivalent of Shark Tank).

He is now a successful investor through his company JamJar Investments, where they invest in strong teams with an idea that consumers love.

Another excellent evening, thanks Marian, Richard and Startup Grind:

    Takeaways...

If Richard Reed owned a broom there would be no innocent drinks...

...start with a complimentary team (if everyone is obsessing on the same thing then the team is skewed)...

...pitch with a product demo and you'll appeal to their right 'creative' side of the brain, left brain slides and they will challenge the detail...

... publish the recipe on the outside of the bottle and make your secret ingredient obsessive quality...

...a write up in the Times will get your Mum onside...

...don't be afraid of being a David to their Goliath...

...you can retain control of your business with less than a controlling share of equity when you do a big funding deal...

...do good, make money, in hard times be prepared to have your world immeasurably improved by Coca Cola...

...if you can organise a wedding you can start a business and...

...the moment you commit is when the universe will start to provide.

Quality. Proximity is Power. Always awesome to be around entrepreneurs. Currently at the stage of raising finance for a franchise that I want to launch, Marian will there be any investors for me to connect with after the main talk?

    • Marian

Sure, Jay. We usually have 5 to 10 investors coming to our events. Remind me to introduce you during the event.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
