Come along on Saturday 27th July for a trip to Down House, the home of Charles Darwin.
About the house
Downe House was where Charles Darwin worked on his scientific theories and wrote his groundbreaking theory; 'On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection'.
Down House was also Darwin's home for 40 years and his family's influence can be felt throughout, remaining much as it did when they lived here. You will be able to see the armchair in which Darwin wrote his groundbreaking theory of evolution and wander the family rooms on the ground floor.
His study is much the same as it was in his lifetime and is filled with belongings that give you an intimate glimpse into both his studies and everyday life. On the first floor you will be able to explore an exciting exhibition covering Darwin's life, his scientific work and the controversy it provoked, including: manuscript pages from the Origin of the Species, Darwin's hat, microscope and notebooks, and a full scale replica of the cramped cabin he inhabited aboard HMS Beagle.
Outside, we will be able to explore the extensive gardens.
The house and the village of Downe is like stepping back in time and we will also be able to visit St Mary The Virgin Church which is the resting place for his wife, brother and three of his children.
The house is located just outside of London and is a little tricky to get to, so the aim is to get the train to Bromley South (about 20 mins) and then a short bus journey to the house (about 15 minutes). We are limited to the number we can take (unless you want to drive), as the bus from Bromley is quite small and only run one an hour.
Group entry to the house is £10 each (payable on the day).
Bromley South is in Zone 5 and the bus trip should only be a couple of pounds (you can use your Oyster Card for the bus).
Lookout for the sign at the station outside the main WH Smith shop (picture below).
If you can't see us at the station, please call.
Hope to see you there!
