Day trip to Chichester & Fishbourne

Come along on Bank Holiday Monday 25th August for a day trip to historic Chichester & Fishbourne!

About Chichester

Chichester is a cathedral city in West Sussex.   It has a long history as a settlement; its Roman past and its subsequent importance in Anglo-Saxon times are only its beginnings. It has a 12th-century cathedral, and is home to some of the oldest churches and buildings in Great Britain.

The area around Chichester is believed to have played significant part during the Roman Invasion of Britain in A.D 43, as confirmed by evidence of military storage structures in the area of the nearby Fishbourne Roman Palace.

The city centre stands on the foundations of the Romano-British city of Noviomagus Reginorum, capital of the Civitas Reginorum. The Roman Road of Stane Street, connecting the city with London, started at the east gate.  The plan of the city is inherited from the Romans: the North, South, East and West shopping streets radiate from the central market cross dating from medieval times.

We will be visiting the cathedral, having a guided walk around the town and also visiting the town of Fishbourne nearby to see the Roman Villa.

Cost of the Cathedral tour is £4, the guided walk is £5 and entry to the Roman Villa is £7.

Aprox Itinerary

Another Robert triumph - even the raindrops didn't spoil a very interesting and varied visit to this fascinating city, it's Cathedral and Roman heritage. Lovely people to chat to, and a well organised great day - thanks Robert!

    Great day despite the rain

Gosh so much rain!! I was fun on the train with an uncontrollable Brenda, bless her zany humour(!!), Karen, Andrew and Robert. Then the Cathedral was most pleasant to visit, the artworks surprising and the architecture interesting the company stimulating. Then of course the rain was the protagonist of the day, it rained and rained and rained!! The tour of the town was really worthwhile doing, we arrived at the Roman villa in Fishbourne just a few moments after the other group (chicken!) who refused the tour because of the rain....The guide was informative and we saw the remnants of the Roman civilisation in Fishbourne, the lovely mosaics, garden. The return a wet journey from Fishbourne to London on a very slow train that took so long. I was so wet and soaked to the skin after the wet day and must say that getting home to shed those wet garments and bags was a great relief. Ah! finally dry and eating hot food. A lovely end to an "interesting outing". Cheers comrade in the wet!!

Will either join you on the train at Clapham Junction, or at the station in Chichester. There was little point in going into London, then out.
