Imperial War Museum

Come along on Saturday 23rd August for a visit to the newly refurbished Imperial War Museum!

About the museum

The museum reopens on the 19th July after a £25m refurbishment, which includes new WW1 galleries telling the story of the war.  The reopening coincides with the 100 year anniversary of the outbreak of WW1 on 28th July.

The museum has occupied the former Bethlem Royal Hospital site since 1936. It holds over 11 million items relating to wars fought in by Britain and the commonwealth over the last 100 years. The museum also has seperate exhibitions on the holocaust, a family in war, the secret war (about spies & codebreaking) and paintings of war.

There is a lot to see in the museum, so expect to spend at least two hours looking around.  We will divide into small groups when you arrive, to go round the museum together.

Entry is free!

Afterwards we will head to a local pub for a drink.

If you can't see us outside the station, please call.

Look out for the group sign -

Hope to see you there!

The Holocaust exhibition was extremely moving, and it was amazing how quiet it was despite being very busy. I also found the spying exhibition fascinating.

I came a bit late and did not see the group but visited the museum.

Yet again I failed to get into the WW1 exhibition! Must return sometime soon and as I only live a 10 minute bus ride away I've got no excuse for not doing so. As Rosyln says, the Holocaust gallery is quite poweful. Maybe its my memory at fault, but when I first visited the Holocaust exhibit in the mid 90s my memory was of a much more powerful exhibition. I can't help thinking that over the years this exhibition has been toned down somewhat. Maybe my memory isn't so reliable but I do remember coming out with a sickening feeling in my stomach.

Russell, I visited the Holocaust gallery on the first group outing a few weeks ago. I was struck then by how powerful the exhibition was. I don't remember what it was like in the 90s but I cannot conceive of a more moving exhibition. Also, the huge amount of people present in the gallery was remarkable.

I found the crowds thinned out as the time passed. Hope that wasn't because people gave up halfway through.

Spent most of the time looking at the WWI paintings gallery, the spies section and the bravery section. All brilliant!

So much to see and take in the changes. I too took in floors 3,4 and 5 (VCs, GCs and the Holocaust). The kids' climb in exhibits and the domestic shelter seem to have disappeared. I need to return for the WW1 experience; much earlier though before the queue becomes too long. Thanks Robert for energising me to visit.

The entire exhibition is poignant and moving. What a pity that despite the sacrifice of millions of young people's lives, we still haven't learned the lesson that war brings only misery and solves nothing.

I need to return see the WW1 galleries. I never got there because the Holocaust section was very extensive and is possibly the most powerful exhibition I've ever seen. I'd defy anyone to come out of it unmoved. Altogether an emotional experience - it was much to do with people's personal stories being captured.

Managed to get into the new WW1 galleries, queue notwithstanding. I Saw a wonderful exhibition, light years better than the old one of a few years ago. The sheer amount of materials and the thought behind the display bring that conflict to life. Thoroughly recommend to go if you get the chance.
Apologies to Roslyn and others but I didn't wait until 15:30 because I managed to get a return ticket from the desk much earlier.
