Kenwood House

Come along on Saturday 14th March to the brilliant Kenwood House in Hampstead! We will be meeting up at 1pm at Archway Tube Station, entry to the house is free. The house is a fair walk from the station, but their is a local bus that goes right outside. Kenwood House is a mansion which dates from the early 17th century. The orangery was added in about 1700. In 1754 it was bought by William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield. He commissioned Robert Adam to remodel it from 1764-1779. Adam added the library (one of his most famous interiors) to balance the orangery, and added the Ionic portico at the entrance. In[masked] George Saunders added two wings on the north side, and the offices and kitchen buildings and brewery (now the restaurant) to the side. Among its splendid interiors hangs the wonderful Iveagh Bequest of paintings, including masterpieces by Vermeer, Rembrant, Turner, Reynolds and Gainsborough: along with the Suffolk Collection's magnificent portraits of Elizabethan and Stuart celebrities. The 18th century landscaped grounds preserve many original features. After a look round the house we can either pop into the cafe in the grounds or go to a local pub for a chat over a drink. If you can't see us, give me a call. Hope to see you there. Regards Robert [masked]

This house has a fantastic location, dight on the top of Hampstead Heath with a view all the way down towards London in the Distance. The Eye, Canary Wharf, The Gherkin, all can be seen. Beautiful parklands with Lakes and Bridges. But this house was far more impressive on the inside, with room after room full of beautiful Paintings, Gainsboroughs, Turners, Rembrandt. Then totally unexpected, upstairs, what used to be 'The Chinese Room' and all that is left is the fireplace with Chinese Marble pictures. For the 18th Century this would have been something very foreign and exotic. - just spectacular.

Very interesting, great collection of [portraits there at present plus two wonderful paintings of Venice by Guardi. Great also to walk afterwards, through the grass and then to Hampstead with very nice group of people. If indoor cafe had been open would have been perfect.

Interesting art, atmosphere that is not too noisy or quiet, lots of outdoor space in which to walk around.
