Git & Github kickstart workshop

  • 10gen London Office

    2F-G, 5-25 Scrutton Street, London (map)

    51.523361 -0.083790

  • Github is probably the worlds most popular developer resource for sharing code collaboratively. However, many developers haven't had the opportunity to get going with Git yet.

    So this workshop aims to get you started and give you some practice with git. If you have not worked with git much, this is a great warm up to the Git deep dive event later this month.

    This workshop is focused on the basics of using git as a developer and will not be diving under the covers of git, or covering any implementation details.

    6pm - find the 10Gen office on 2nd floor
    6.30pm - workshop starts

    By the end of this workshop you will have:
    * git command line / graphical tool set up on your laptop
    * understanding staging, committing and pushing changes
    * working with git status and git log to manage changes
    * experience using github for new repos as well as forking & cloning
    * managing multiple repositories easily with git log
    * working with pull request
    * using github organisations

    There probably wont be time to include other topics such as branching & merging (except with respect to pull requests), rebasing, or the hundreds of other features available in git.

    Sorry everyone, I'll have to postpone this event. I have injured my leg and am not able to walk very well.

    I'll arrange another Git Workshop when I have recovered.

    To help speed up this workshop, if you can create yourself an account on Github and download a Git client of some kind that would be great. You can get a git client from the github website for Mac and Windows.

    Ooops, cut-n-paste event coding is not always a good thing :) Yes, the 10Gen office is on the 2nd floor and not the 27th floor (thats the Salesforce office).

    When you enter the building on the ground floor, walk over to the far right hand side and either take Lift 3 or the stairs just before lift 3 to the second floor.

    You have to take those specific stairs or lift or you wont get to the 10gen offices.

    The 10gen office is hard enough to find, suggesting it's on the 27th floor might lead to extreme confusion!

    Looking at my schedule, I'll dont seem to have time to do another session until after Devoxx UK -

    Given that there are currently more people on the waiting list than are attending, is there the possibly of running another session at some point in the future?

      In an infinite universe, anything is possible... I'll look for a venue and announce a third git / github workshop soon.
