LJC Festive Un-Party!

LJC Festive Un-Party!

Come one, come all and join us for the LJC festive un-party. It will be on the 29th January at the Village Hall in Shoreditch. The refreshments are being sponsored by our good friends Atlassian and Hazelcast.

This will be something a little different to our usual LJC events and will include a combination of open mic style presentations, lightning talks and a few surprises.

We are also going to be getting in the party mood with something a bit new in the shape of blind-ignite talks… If you are unfamiliar with the concept - in ignite talks each speaker gets 5 minutes, and must use 20 slides with each slide advancing automatically after 15 seconds, forcing speakers to get to the point, fast. We're going to spice this up by giving the presenter little or no time to prepare for the talk. Meaning that a senior speaker will be tasked with giving an ignite presentation that they haven't seen before.

We'll also be having an update on what's been happening with Adopt-a-JSR, the LJC Book club and all the other things that go on within the LJC.

Please note:

This event is being held at Shoreditch Village Hall, 33 Hoxton Square, London, N1 6NN - http://shoreditchworks.com/shoreditch-village-hall

Event organised by the awesome folk at RecWorks - check out the blog here:

Hazelcast is the leading open source in-memory data grid. By having multiple nodes (JVM) form a cluster, data is evenly distributed among the nodes. This allows for horizontal scalability both in terms of available storage space and processing power. Backups are also distributed in a similar fashion to other nodes, based on configuration, thereby protecting against single node failure.  Visit us at www.hazelcast.com

This was an awesome start to the LJC Unparty series, and I had a lot of fun, and also chatted to some amazing people! I thought the blind ignite talks were great fun, and a massive thanks to Richard and Martijn for volunteering to present the one I created, and also a huge thanks to Mani and Edward for creating and helping me out with the other (and lets not forget Barry and Simon's very funny Evangelism talk! :-))

I also enjoyed the '60 seconds' game, and the participants really got into the spirit (maybe we need prizes next time?). In general I thought the structure of the evening was very good, and it was nice to have time to chat and network between the organised stuff. I'm curious to see what others thought? Congrats and thanks to all the RecWorks crew, and I'm looking forward to future events!! :-)

+1 on all that - wanted to say it all! Great job Daniel and Edward, and big apologies for putting you guys on the spot! I promise to work on my blind ignite slide writing skills for the next time.

If anybody around has worked on linear optimization, maybe talk to me about glpk/cplex/gurobi. Doing some large problems and would like to hear anything you have to share about optimization and optimizers.

I've finished creating the blind 'Java Performance' ignite talk for Martijn and Richard, and I'm pleased to say the ratio of cats pictures to slides has reached critical mass... :-)

And to balance the situation, I have just finished the 'Adopt OpenJDK / Betterrev' blind ignite talk for you, (me) and Edward - will be fun to see how it goes!

Disclaimer: not a single cat picture! But lots of dukes and tetra-feeted animals lol!

More volunteers needed - one of the things we're running is a technology just a minute. It's a game with a panel of people, where panellists are expected to talk for sixty seconds on a given technology subject, "without repetition, hesitation or deviation" Wikipedia has a full list of rules if you want to know the details, though I imagine we'll be playing fast and loose with them. Or as fast and loose as you can imagine for an idea stolen from radio 4.

We are looking for 2-3 volunteers to sit on the panel. The only requirement is willingness to talk about a topic which you possibly know little to nothing about for up to a minute. It's basically the same criteria as being a software conference speaker... Any takers?

    Hi Barry,

I am game for anything, sounds like fun. I am a fan of extemporaneous word poetry/ MC Rap Battles, especially as related to Java. =)
