Re: [ljc] Introduction to Java Training Course

+1! :)

I'm in the process of doing it for the 2nd time. I took the SCJP for Java 5 exam a few years ago, and now doing it again for Java 6 just to freshen up and to help a few others at work who come from a more database-oriented background and are taking the exam for the first time. I aim to take the Java 7 exam next year (once it's finalised), so hopefully this will serve as some preparation for that as well (SCJP/OCP for Java 5/6 is a pre-requisite for OCP Java 7, isn't it?).

Hi all,

Shout-out for all those who like the SCJP?

I do. I've done it twice with different versions and plan to do it again! It's a great way to go back over the basics and learn them to a reasonable level. You actually have to know what you are doing to some extent to pass it; assuming you don't buy a TestKing paper and cheat. If you approach it seriously and put a few months of part-time study in then you can gain a lot from it but with a nice syllabus and conclusion; unlike just reading the books on your own.

Certifications can make a difference when not much else differentiates CVs. Certainly at the entry-level Java certs are a great idea to set yourself apart from the mass of other graduates. Although I, like Neale, have never personally been asked about my certs I have worked for 2 companies where we told the agency "Java certs are a big plus".
