Hi Peter,

Sorry to go off topic a bit, but do you have any recommended reading on how one might go about creating deb packages?

I know of http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/maint-guide/, but thought you might know of some other valuable resources :)

Cheers,
Karl

Hi,

my "home setup" is just laptop (if we talk hardware), software - xubuntu as os (as it is easier for me to create and test deb packages, run and configure tomcat, automate stuff etc.), sts (which is basically eclipse with spring plugins), maven3 (maybe you should even try gradle), git (version control), jenkins (integration server) and deb repo. If you need you can have nexus repo as well.

How it works, I have commit hooks on git, so when I commit, it starts building job in jenkins, where I run unit tests (testng), code coverage (cobertura) and create deb package (every product has script that builds deb package), which is then uploaded to deb repo.

Hi all,

I'm hoping this is an appropriate question for this group, if not please accept my apologies.

Having moved down to London for a new job, which I enjoy, I have found that it doesn't include as much development work as my previous job. This is fine, but in an attempt to scratch my programming itch, I'm hopefully going to do some development work at home. So my question is, if you were setting up an "ideal" home development environment what would you want/include in it such as certain tools, software, plugins, OS'es etc.  These don't even have to directly related to the task of "writing code" but just what people would like in their ideal setup.

I appreciate this is a rather subjective question but I was just wondering what people think.

To provide a bit of additional context for my situation, if people want to include their context then feel free :-)
I am primarily a Java Developer (most of the work I did in my previous job was using Swing for desktop applications) but I am looking into expanding my skillset so I am thinking of working on either Android or more "web" based java development.
My IDE of choice is Eclipse for the simple reason I have most experience with that so this is what I am most likely to use, so if people have suggestions for plugins that would be cool.
Currently I am working on a laptop which is running Vista but which also dual boots into Ubuntu so those are the OS'es I am currently working with.
The idea in my head is that, as well as scratching my coding itch, I should use this to learn more about best practises/new approaches like Continuous Integration, build management, build tools (I've used Ant a little so this is probably an area that will be worth focusing on first).

So thats basically it, I appreciate its rather a vague nebulous question, but I'm trying to use it to start figuring out what its worth focusing my attention on initially when setting up this home dev environment.

Thanks,

Andy Dickinson
