Certifications are not a good way to learn the language.  They are adequate for consolidating your knowledge, and certainly for exposing (to yourself) any gaps you might have.

Some employers like them, many don't consider them as valuable at all.  My opinion is save yourself the cash and the time and follow some of the other suggestions (and I have two certifications myself - they were only useful to me, not towards me getting a job).

Easy way to get into Java without some of the extra complexities of server development.  There's only one framework to learn for a start ;-)
