Re: [ljc] Does anyone remember Street Fighter 2 or Mario Kart?

Video games being laddish is perhaps a bit of a stereotype, no?

I've had success buying old consoles on eBay.  Just beware of the type of TV connector included.

Sounds good guys.

As you say may be a bit late for tonight, but does anyone know of anywhere we could pick up an old Super Nintendo? I'm sure there was a 2nd hand games boutique somewhere around Oxford Street... I know there are a lot of gamers in the group so if anyone has any suggestions then do let me know.

@Ged, good point, this is important and we'll make sure and keep a good atmosphere, I don't think it will get too 'laddy' but should just offer something a bit different. We'll give it a try and if it get's out of hand or doesn't work out then we will not repeat it.

Cheers,
Barry

It's on PS3 as well and I've got a copy! XD

Old school 8-bit action FTW!

Back on topic - I think Ged has a point that we don't want to make this too distracting. Probably not enough time to plan this for tonight but I'm up for helping set this up next month!

Sounds good to me too. 2 of my favourites!

Going back further to Mega Drive, there is a good XBox game (and PC too I think) called 'Sega Megadrive Ultimate Collection', it's got Sonic, Golden Axe, Final Fight and others on it. The last 2 are 2 player and pretty classic arcade games.

Cheers,
Jon

I can't make it tonight but this sounds awesome.

If it is kept to one side appropriately then I can't see a problem.

Furthermore we could perhaps invite some devs from the Indie Game community to come along and demo in the future. I'm sure some of them need to hire as well Barry ;)

Hey guys,

A few months back in a Developer Sessions event a good natured disagreement erupted... not like the usual conversations at Developer Sessions such as Scala vs Clojure, or where the future of Java was going... this was a disagreement over who would win in a fight on the old Super Nintendo classic Street Fighter 2 :-) We joked about bringing in an old school console to the Developer Sessions event to settle it.

I wanted to get your thoughts on whether this is something people would like to have in the background at the Developer Sessions events. Perhaps running head to head games on a few classics like Super Mario Kart or Street Fighter 2 etc. It could be held in the corner and there just as a bit of fun or as an ice breaker. If it were a popular decision it could lead to competitions or similar...

We discussed it amongst the LJC organisers and there was certainly a lot of interest in doing something like this at the Developer Sessions events so I thought I'd find out if there was similar enthusiasm from the LJC itself?

- Would you want to have a console at the event?
- Do you think it would take away from or add to the event?
- Are there any old school classic games that you'd like to see?

If we have enough enthusiasm we'll see if we can sort it out for the event tonight: http://www.meetup.com/Londonjavacommunity/events/120885702/

Cheers,
Barry
