Hi Andy,

there's a mainlist list about the open source JavaFX aka OpenJFX: http://mail.openjdk.java.net/mailman/listinfo/openjfx-dev and It's is quite active. If there's any instabilities, I'm sure there's a lot of people working on it.
The OpenJFX are also working to build JavaFX apps to Android and IOS

While it did look like Swing was dead and long forgotten by Oracle, there has been a large number of Swing changes for JDK9 (ok, any number >0 is large for swing :-) ).  Looks mainly to do with generics being finally added and code cleanup (it now passes the lint checker).
A good point for looking for the changes is the Swing mailing list http://mail.openjdk.java.net/pipermail/swing-dev/ from Jult'14 onwards.

The changes did caused one compile time error with the scala-swing library (soon to be fixed :-) ) but otherwise works.

Does anyone know the current status of JavaFX with OpenJDK? The last I looked it was not included and so make it unusable on most *nix platforms.

We are starting a new project for a client next week. It is a desktop app (yes, it needs to be). Having worked a lot with AWT and Swing in a distant past, we decided to use JavaFX instead.

I played with JavaFX (Java 8) recently and I really liked it. It worked well with IntelliJ, SceneBuilder is quite good, and I found it great to be able to style the UI using CSS, making it look quite nice.

I'll probably be able to say more in a few weeks, but I'm pretty convinced that I won't regret.

I am aware of a swing app, in active dev, that is used by real electric engineers.
Devs are playing with javafx, but it's swing and netbeans rcp now.

Cheers,
Andrzej

We have a small swing app for the administrator console of our NoSQL database. Swing is still viable but development is painful and dull IMHO. Scala-Swing can ease that quite a bit. But depending on your needs I would suggest investigating using the NetBeans platform as a base for any new large java desktop app. We found it excellent.

Hi everyone,

I'd like to perform a quick, non-scientific poll on Swing use.  Are you working on, or aware of[1], real life Swing apps in production? Is it still a viable technology to use/learn, or currently filed under "legacy technologies"?
