Paluxy River Run formerly Ride to Rough Creek/

  • This location is shown only to members

  • This ride in the North Texas Hill Country is one of my favorites and the roads are some of the best in North Texas in my estimation.  Living part time in the North Texas Hill Country area has given Alex and I the chance to ride and  discover a lot of new roads.  The route will include some ranch roads and FM roads with many twist and turns along the area ridges and valleys that reveal some amazing vistas, scenery, and wildlife as we ride along, around, over, and through the Paluxy River.  Yes, I said through the Paluxy as well.  It's just a few low water crossing so just be prepared to wash your bike when you get home.  Our route will remain as planned.  We will pass by the Rough Creek Lodge but our lunch destination has changed.  Because of the weather we had to move our lunch at Rough Creek Lodge back a week.  However, the Lodge representative called me and advised me that  because of Spring Break, the Lodge has been completely booked and will not be able to seat us.  Not to worry, I contacted the owner of Hollywood and Vine in Glen Rose and she told me that although they were normally closed on Sunday, she would open for us and give us a 10% discount.  This place has some of the best burgers and chicken fried steaks around.  So I know that you will all be more than pleased with this ride and I am excited to lead and show it to you.  I'll bet that there are some roads that most of you have never seen before.

So the new time is Sunday at the spring ahead 9 am, correct? I'm going to try making this one....but what's the deal with crossing through the river? Don't care if bike is dirty, but I don't like wet tires.

It looks like it will be too cold for me & i hate to miss it---so i hope you'll offer this ride again when the weather is warmer. I'll miss everyone!

The weather report keeps changing and I am optimistic that it will be okay for Sunday. As long as it doesn't rain we can layer and leather up and be fine. With all of this cold weather the walls are closing in and the road is calling. I need to get out and ride.

    March 6

  • brian l.

Gary. I think with this weather god is telling you to wait another week so i can go on this ride with everyone.

Sorry, weather forecast for Sunday is a HIGH of 50 deg.
Waaaaay too cold for my old bones. I am gonna have to pass on another one. Maybe Spring will really arrive someday.

    • Jack

If the forecast changes, and I make the ride after all, I'll contact you to ride over together if you want, weather permitting.

The forecast changes faster than I do my underwear right now so wait and see time.

Let's all remember that this is Texas. Even though it's supposed to be cold and rainy this weekend, maybe the weather will change for the better. Hollywood and Vine and the roads of Hood and Somervell Counties will always be there.

  • Jim G.

I'm beginning to think this ride may have a "Jinx" on it. Typically the 2nd week of March is the last of our cold weather. I am sure we will get this ride in. Some day...

I think Laura J. may be interviewing for our new "Tour Guide". Thanks for all the insight.

"As you come up to The Hollywood and Vine, what do you expect? Well, a giant Hollywood sign in the California Hills behind, flanked by palm trees, of course. That’s just what you get. Already I love it.

Vine Street, you may know, is a street in the other Hollywood, running past Hollywood Boulevard. We’ve been there as well and couldn’t but help notice the palms and Hollywood sign. Now which location had it first?

The Hollywood and Vine in Texas was built as a sanatorium in the 1890s and there were three wells in the town. Well, well, well…now people prefer to drink their fill at The Hollywood and Vine, where the hills look like Hollywood and the live entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings enhances this interesting neighbourhood eating place.

Wanda gave us the guided tour of her fascinating inn where she is now planning on bringing in lots of new showpieces, majoring on veterans’ mementoes....."

Looks like this will be a great ride with a really fun lunch stop. Here is part of a review I found on Trip Advisor for Hollywood and Vine in Glen Rose :)

“I’ve seen Elvis - in Hollywood, Texas!”
    4 of 5 stars Reviewed[masked]

We saw Elvis, we met Wanda and we had a good meal. What better way to set you up for a trip to the Dinosaur World in Glen Rose, Texas?

Wanda Crider is the characterful owner of The Hollywood and Vine Restaurant at 101 NE Vine Street in Glen Rose, Texas, and judging by the fittings and ambience of this colourful eating house she is the right person to carry on its quirky traditions. A lifelike Elvis sits on one of the balconies, overseeing the fun….

I like quirkiness. Better by far than the bland chain eateries we often pass, on our way to the local hometown ma and pa café.

(see my next post for the rest of this review)

So what exactly am I RSVP'd for? Someone please let me know so I can change it. Thanks. What and where is Natty Flat Smoke House?

    1 · February 26

    • Jim T.

That's a different ride Saturday Susan. I believe this forum is now for the Rough Creek Lodge on Sunday. At least for now it seems to be.

      February 26

    • Jim G.

Susan, We have moved Rough Creek back 1 week so that we can eat at the lodge. The weather is going to be bad on Sunday and we could not get in to the Lodge on Saturday. There is a new ride for Saturday at Natty Flats. This was chosen for a change in scenery. The mere fact that you know nothing about is why we posted it. Something new. Hope we see you and Charlie.

      1 · February 26

  • Rick A.

This Ride, Rough Creek Lodge, has been postponed 1 week until March 9.
A new ride has been posted for this Saturday March 1, to Natty Flat Smoke House, near Morgan Mill (north west of Lipan) Anyone who RSVP'd for Rough Creek Lodge is still signed up for March 9. To RSVP for this Saturday, go to "Let's Ride to Natty Flats"
    Sorry for the confusion.
Jim I am sorry, for my comment. I thought you were joking! Hope to see you all Saturday. Natty Flat Smoke House gets great reviews! The route is already mapped. We can plan a new route for Hard 8 soon!

Saturday sounds great to me. We can go to Loco Coyote or the Hard 8 in Stephenville. I don't care. I just want to ride. There's always a Subway. We could even go through Fossil Rim Wildlife Park, but we would be the lunch!

    3 · February 25

    • Rick A.

Jim, Jim, Al, Tommy, and I ate there one day last week. It wasn't bad. Good for 15 or 20 maybe.

      February 26

Well, we could do the Loco Coyote, or some place in Glen Rose, and keep the same route more or less. I also have Natty Flats BBQ route posted without a date as another option, and we could move Rough Creek back a week. Option 3, I can talk to Jim Bardwell. He mentioned Mary's out west, and ride out around Palo Pinto, Santo area. The options are endless!

    1 · February 25

  • Jim G.

Yes Monique. We will relocate. Maybe next door or across the street. :) Also we will have to change lunch locations because Rough Creek is booked for Saturday. I am like you and need to get out.

The weather forecast is calling for rain on this date. We may have to postpone the ride if things don't change. Of course, this is Texas and that's a strong possibility that it will. Maybe the weather man got it wrong

How is the mix of bikes in this group? I mean if someone had a 'sport bike' and wanted to get a bit more aggressive on the twist?

    February 20

    • Gary

Cory, we have sport bikes but as a general rule we all stay behind the leader for safety reasons. We also have Road Captain that block for us when going through intersections and a tail gunner. If you want to hang back behind the tail gunner in order to ride more aggressively through the turns I guess that's okay. Just as long as we keep safety in mind.
