This whole situation reminds me of the asinine people getting high places in Atlas Shrugged. It is sad really.
Oh well.... Who is John Galt?

I mean the appointment is a problem... it is a problem for our country.  As Harris points out, the
guys book is mired not only in ignorance, but in grotesquely obfuscated layers of deception about
the nature of science and religion.  It is pretty gross that somebody who has received the highest
scientific honors in the USA can write such a book -- two possibilities, both assuming that Collins
is extremely intelligent and has a vast and encyclopedic knowledge and understanding of science:

1. Collins is a fake.  He believes, as many do, that "the masses" are ignorant and dangerous, and
are best served by being buried in piles of nonsense and "faith" their entire lives.  He believes
science is too dangerous, too powerful for the masses; and that faith keeps the masses in check
more than anything, and helps to get status quo political parties reelected etc. His book is a
grotesque farce that he laughs about at Harvard Skull and Bones meetings over bottles of
rare whiskey.  (probability 70%)

2. Collins has been irreversibly religiously imprinted.  For me, this gets to issues involved in what
researches term as "bilateral asymmetry of the cerebral hemispheres", the notion that humans
have two brains, essentially, that communicate with each other.  In Collins case, the religious, credulous,
fearful side of his mind is able to withstand all the knowledge of the scientific side of his brain,
and, in turn, force himself to exert incredible energy in resolving and repressing contradictions between
what his reason tells him and what his faith demands of him.  (probability 25%)

3. Collins is 100% all about religion; his understanding of science is like that of a robot.  He is able
to parrot or copy scientific knowledge, and is politically savvy enough to move up through the ranks,
but at heart he feels that science is a delusion of the devil and he is "dwelling in the belly of the beast",
in order to eventually subvert science in the name of his true faith in jeezus. (probability 5%)
