About FRIENDS of Long Beach Animals and what we do
Friends of Long Beach Animals is a privately Funded 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the promotion of humane treatment and care of cats, dogs and all other animals through the education of the public, as to pet owner responsibilities, within the Cities of Long Beach and Signal Hill, California. Friends of Long Beach Animals supports laws and legislation that make abuse of animals a serious crime.
FRIENDS is an all-volunteer organization, donating time and energy to making a difference for the animals in Long Beach and Signal Hill. Through the efforts of the volunteers and many donors, thousands of lives have been saved.
FRIENDS believes that dogs and cats play important roles in their caretakers lives. We realize that by helping animals, we are really helping the entire community. The Spay/Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP) exists to stop the destruction of healthy dogs and cats in animal shelters resulting from overpopulation and neglect.
SAVING LIVES THROUGH SPAY/NEUTER & EDUCATION
Our goal is to stop pet overpopulation and end the euthanasia of any healthy pet. Our work is limited to the Long Beach/Signal Hill area where we hope to make an impact by preventing unwanted animals from being born. Friends works with several local City Departments for voucher distribution and, through education, is encouraging all residents to have a veterinarian spay and neuter their pets.
In 1998, Friends recognized the need for a low cost spay/neuter and public awareness program and introduced our city's only
Spay Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP). Our program encourages participation by all city residents and offers low cost and/or free vouchers to local residents requiring financial assistance. We are extremely proud of our accomplishments to date, resulting in more than 13,000 animals spayed/neutered.
Friends sponsors an Approved Curriculum for the Long Beach Unified School District for all students Kindergarten through 12th Grade.
This program is FREE to all schools in the Long Beach Unified School District. Contact the Friends' Office 562-988-7647 for more information.
Friends stands by its word when it says it actively supports teaching children kindness to and respect for animals. They have provided several copies of humane books to all of the libraries in the Long Beach Unified School District, all the Public Libraries in Long Beach and Signal Hill, as well as "Raising-a-Reader" and Mary Bethune Transitional Center (assisting homeless children who need reading improvement so they can attend regular LBUSD classes).
Assistance for Shelter Animals
Friends works with the Long Beach Animal Care Services in providing life-saving medication and vet care for special needs pets as well as pain medication and flea prevention treatment for animals while in the care of LBACS.
Friends provides necessary supplies for the comfort and care of the shelter animals such as cages, training collars, kennel cars, KONG toys, cat woofle toys and other items no longer affordable by the Shelter due to budget cuts.
Fund Raising & Community Events
Friends organizes several fund raising events to be able to continue to provide and grow our services and humane education to the residents of the Cities of Long Beach and Signal Hill. Our annual Walk for the Animals, Long Beach Playhouse benefit and membership drives to mention a few. Friends also participates in local community events like the Belmont Shore Christmas Parade, Daisy Avenue Christmas Parade and the Long Beach Veterans Parade.
