Creationist Museum and San Diego Archealogical Center

Some of us have talked about going to this mystical place, so here I am creating the event for it. The date can be up for change, but I think this can be lots of fun! It is not for the easily offended. It would most likely turn to be a whole day event and would strongly urge people to either carpool or to take the train down there.

The website for the location is here:  http://creationsd.org/index.html

And to balance the meetup, we'll also be going to the San Diego Archealogical Center.

T-Shirts

Several members have also expressed a desire to purchase a wearscience shirt.  I will be pooling orders so that we can order as a group and all save on shipping.  If you want a shirt, email me the design and size.  You can either remit payment through PayPal or pay in cash at the next meetup.  Shirts can be picked up at a meetup, or you can drop by my place or meet me somewhere before then.

I enjoyed both. The Creation Museum spent some real money on their exhibits and they were very detailed. For being small, the SDAC had some nice displays as well, and we got to meet the director.

Should we meet earlier? The SD Archealogical Center closes at 2:00 pm on Saturdays.

    January 3, 2013

    • Robert

yeah, that actually will work better, i didn't realize that we will actually pass the archaeological center on our way down there (kinda). How about we plan on meeting there at about[masked] am, then get some lunch, go to the creationist location, get an early dinner, and then come back. Sound good?

So here is what I figure the driving situation is at so far, Jan and her friend will go with me and a buddy of mine. Sophie, Adam, and Morganna will go in a second car. Jan, do you want me to pick you and your friend up? Also, what is the address for the Archaeological Center?

    January 3, 2013

    • Robert

Sorry, just arrived home from a long day at work and my phone died. I will be at your place at about 9 (maybe a bit earlier). I will call you when I am on my way. We will decide which car to take once my friend and I arrive.

      Understood. Earlier would be good.

Alright, so who wants to carpool from Long Beach? And who wants to just meet us down there? Please post here if you want to carpool or just meet us down there so we can get some kind of head count for this adventure. Thank you.

How many do you have already, Robert? I have two, and I could drive too, and take another 3 in my CR-V.

OK, Adam and I are carpooling with Morganna.

Am I the only one who finds this sad. Why taunt or belittle someones view. I have two dear Atheist friends. And when I mentioned this idea they were offended as well. To many this may seem tongue and cheek. But it is just as bad as religious people making fun as well.

    December 29, 2012

    • Robert

This was made into a forum post, please take it there, the chat in the event is just pertaining to who is able to go and such. So please move your post to the forum, thank you.

As a deeply religious man and a man of science as well. I find this idea repulsing. Atheists are sometimes just as close minded. And follow the religion of Science. But forgets problems within evolution non transitional forms and other problems. As well as literally interpreting Scripture passages as well. To taunt a persons personal faith isn't mature. You may not agree with them. But going down there to insult or so called enlighten them reeks of bigotry and religious intolerance. This Meetup was about getting together to read literature and wholesome gaming. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

It still reeks of bigotry and religious intolerance

      October 19, 2012

    • Bill

Sorry to say it but it is a form of Bigotry as well.

Robert, I live in Lakewood, and a friend who is also go lives in Long Beach. Shall we carpool? I don't mind driving and we can split the cost of gas. Email me at atheistheaven (at) ymail.com if you want to carpool.

    December 28, 2012

    • Robert

I would love to, however my car only seats 4 people (4 belts). I can try to switch cars with someone so I can take 5, but as of now, I am not able too.

I am carpooling with Dori from Anaheim--we'll meet you guys there.

I have also told my Student Philosophy Society group at school (Philosophy club basically) about this trip, and some of them are very interested in going as well, not sure how many yet though. Will know more as the date comes closer.

Has anyone visited the San Diego Archealogical Center outside Escondido?

Perhaps we could visit it before/after visiting the Creation Museum. Two ends of the spectrum...

I believe this was a subject Sophie and I covered in the discussion thread.

    October 20, 2012

  • Robert

Alright, I think this is partly caused by my words that I said prior. I didn't mean to actually cause people to deny God that once did, but I am a philosopher (or in training still I suppose) and I ask questions, I find out why people think and believe the way they do. I don't go out with the intent to turn people, but if me simply asking questions makes someone turn, then I have to believe that their faith was not so strong to begin with. I would like to suggest we have an intelligent discussion and not allow any of the name calling or trash talking from anyone after we visit the museum over a few beers and/or coffee, sound good?

Except mid-December is the height of the holiday seasons. Might be harder for folks to set aside a day for this. Sorry to suggest this, but maybe January?

      October 16, 2012

    • Robert

I am going to push this back to January 5th for now at least, we can move it around again if need be, but not going beyond January

      October 19, 2012

hey guys, it looks like I might have to pull out of this. I have other obligations on that day that preclude an all day trip to San Diego :-(

I won't be able to make the event on the 26th, but put me down for a shirt!

Ok folks, I am ordering the shirts this Wednesday.

But do bear in mind that today's fashionable faith in science denies that the world is flat, that the body consists of four humours, that leeching cures venereal complaint, that gold can be alchemically converted to lead, that Ptolemy was correct, that bumps on a person’s head correlates to personality, that AIDS is a retro-virus, etc, etc, ad nauseum.
But by all means “intellectually own the $)*# out of the science hatin' [closed-minded] fools” and help them question their "faith."

“Man, introverted man, having crossed In passage and but a little with the nature of things this latter century Has begot giants; but being taken up Like a maniac with self-love and inward conflicts cannot manage his hybrids..... His mind forebodes his own destruction; Actaeon who saw the goddess naked among leaves and his hounds tore him. A little knowledge, a pebble from the shingle,
A drop from the oceans; who would have dreamed this infinitely little too much?”

    -Robinson Jeffers

    September 17, 2012

  • Robert

I think we all will. I may have them questioning their faith at the end of talking with them. Wonder if we can have them give us a guided tour.

    September 17, 2012

    • Morganna

If they are at the museum, chances are you won't stand a chance no matter how well-crafted your argument is.

I *may* be going to Oktoberfest for my sisters annual Let's Get Drunk For My Birthday Party the day but if it's not on that day, I'm in! Fair warning, I'll want to intellectually own the $)*# out of the science hatin' fools!

  • Morganna

    September 11, 2012

  • Sophie

Also, we need to coordinate the ordering of the shirts. We should order soon, to ensure that we'll get our stuff on time. I don't mind collecting the orders and then placing them all at once, and we'll split the shipping. Adam and I are ordering. Anyone else?

    September 11, 2012

  • Morganna

That was the foundation I was looking at, actually. And if I recall correctly, it says that you should use the bible.

    September 11, 2012

  • Sophie

Wow....just wow. So how do they recommend that fossils be dated? Also, unlike your idea of hard mode. I can talk to the Long Beach Science meetup and see if we can get folks to pledge $1 for every gross violation of facts and objective reality that is found. I am a member of Foundation Beyond Belief. Perhaps we can pledge the money there.

    September 11, 2012

  • Morganna

Just so people realize what we're getting into, on the virtual tour there is a sign visible. It says that for fossils, one cannot and should not look at radiometric dating, the rock layer in which it was found, or where the fossil was found in order to determine the fossil's age. Just putting that out there.

    September 11, 2012

  • Morganna

After seeing the recent Bill Nye video that got a lot of peoples' panties up in a bunch, I'm debating doing this on hardmode-pledging X amount of money to a science charity every time I see something offensive to the laws and fundamentals of science.

Carpool setup! Morganna, you've volunteered to be a carpool driver. If you're still interested, Adam and I will happily join your carpool and pitch in on gas, since you live near us. Also, we'll designate Adam as the back-up driver in case an emergency happens and you can no longer drive. How many people can you fit in your car?

Anyone else interested in being a driver? If so, please respond with your general location, and how many people you can fit into your vehicle.

    August 25, 2012

    • Morganna

I can seat 4 people plus me if you don't min getting to know your seat mates rather intimately.

      August 28, 2012

    • Robert

I would prefer not to drive my car down there but can if need be. I can drive down there as well. If it turns out to be just us 5, then I think we can do just the one car though.

      August 28, 2012

  • Robert

I am sure we will carpool, I am not sure how far it is from the train station either, so can be another option as well. I know of some really good food down there, so make sure to bring a few bucks to eat as well as pitch in for gas.

    August 20, 2012

    • Sophie

hey Robert, if you know of any specific places please list them out so we can yelp them, look for coupons, and add it to the event description.

      August 25, 2012

    • Robert

http://www.tacosmackd... this is one place i would heavily recommend. I will try to remember some of the other places I have been to down there as well that was good.

      August 26, 2012

  • Morganna

We can get free shipping if we pool orders for controversy shirts, just sayin'. I'd be down to drive.

    August 19, 2012

    • Adam

Then I'd love to mooch a ride from you :p. But I will also say this: I seem to always be one of the driving people for stuff, and I don't really mind that much. If we need my car for carpooling, I'm happy to provide it. And pooling orders does sound like a good idea. I've been wanting a couple of those shirts for years, just been too lazy to actually order them.

      August 21, 2012

    • Sophie

Good idea, Morganna! I don't mind placing the order. Whoever wants a shirt can email me the style and size, and reimburse me either with cash in person or through Paypal.

      August 25, 2012

  • Morganna

Anyone have an idea of which shirt they like? For science! (Really I'm just curious.)

    August 21, 2012

  • Adam

Yeah, I would hope it would be a full day of stuff, all the way out in SD. I'm sure we could find things to do out there; I haven't been to San Diego since Comicon a few years ago, and I obviously was busy with Comicon the whole time then.

    August 21, 2012

  • Robert

well, I was thinking since it is near halloween, can dress up as a dinosaur or the "missing link" as well lol

    1 · August 16, 2012

  • Sophie

    August 16, 2012

I'm thinking one of these shirts should be a mandatory for this trip!
