Longmont Friends of Fiber Public Meeting @ TinkerMill

This isn't directly TinkerMill related, but it effects most of us and several of you said you wanted to know when it was happening and we're having the first meeting at TinkerMill, so, consider yourselves invited.

Longmont Friends of Fiber

What is the Longmont Friends of Fiber Group?  We are a group of residents and businesses that would like to see ultra high speed interenet access via gigabit fiber, provided by the Longmont Power and Communications (LPC) division, become reality.

For that to happen, we (Longmont residents with support from Longmont businesses) need to fund the build out with an LPC secured bond issue that will be voted on in the November election.  Based on past experience, we expect the incumbent business interests (primarily outsiders and value extractors like Comcast, Centurylink and their related company funded astroturf groups) to spent mid to high six figures to defeat the bond measure with a wide range of FUD (fear, uncertainty and doubt) tactics.  This effort by outsiders is something that can only be countered by the residents of our town.

Our group is forming to support the city and to help our neighbors understand how important this is for our kids, our jobs and our businesses to bring Longmont into the 21st century with ultra high speed interenet access.

To kick off and coordinate our own positive campaign, we are holding a public meeting for anyone interested in seeing Longmont get true Gigabit capable internet via a low cost city owned and operated fiber network.

We hope to have some city representatives that can provide us with the facts of the current proposals and answer any questions we might have.

We are having our first meeting next week, August 15th, at 7pm.

The location is at Longmonts Hackerspace:  TinkerMill.  Located at the Twin Peaks Mall, #49 -1250 S Hover Rd, Longmont, CO 80501 (between the Theater and the GNC store).  Come in the North East Mall entrance, we're just after the GNC store on the left.

Feel free to forward this to anyone you think might be interested.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call or email me.

Great meetup, it was good to meet and speak with the city to understand the facts about Longmont Fiber. We learned high speed, municipal networking is win-win-win for Longmont. Our community will own the resource, raise our economy and return generated utility income right back into our own city. Awesome.

I wish I could come, but my last softball game of the season is at that time.
