Team TinkerMill Robotics

  • There's interest in robototics among our tinkers, so a robotics program for TinkerMill makes sense. In this kickoff meeting we'll discuss where we should start and what our goals should be.  The NASA Sample Return Robot Challenge & SparkFun Autonomous Vehicle Competition are two current programs that give roboticists at various levels a chance to hone their skills and show their stuff.

The NASA Sample Return Robot Challenge is a tough one requiring solutions to a number of non-trivial problems.  An entry would be a big commitment in time and money, but could have a big pay off.  Is it a good fit for Team TinkerMill? If so, should we field a team for 2014, or wait until 2015?

SparkFun's Autonomous Vehicle Competition looks like a fun challenge more suitable for apprentice roboticists.  It's local and has classes to appeal to a range of interests and capabilities.

We'll discuss these competitions and other things that we might want to do.  I'll plan on a few slides to get us started.  If anyone else has slides or a robotics project to share, feel free to bring them.

Steve, traffic in Longmont is very bad eastbound. Yes, we should reschedule.

With the St. Vrain flooding, it doesn't look I'll be able to get out of Lyons today. The bridges between my house and U.S. 36 are flooded. Looks like we should reschedule unless those who can still get to TinkeMill want to discuss some this without me.

Since we're embracing the SparkFun stuff, any chance a sparkfun robotics person would attend and give us an overview of what they've got? Maybe not this meeting, since it's mostly planning, but the next one?

How much time would a SparkFun robotics person need?

Looking forward to lending a helping hand any share my mobile robotics experiences toward the development of a competition bot.

The NASA Challenge appears to be scheduled for June 2014. So far I cannot determine what kind of teams are eligible for getting prize money. I would be interested in being a telecommuting member.

They're fairly open to the kinds of teams who can participate, but only U.S. teams are eligible for prize money.

So, it looks like I may be able to make it.
