The Goldfinch

  • Jun 30, 2014 · 7:30 PM
  • The Rubyfruit Jungle (private residence)

Please note the date change. Congrats! You have an extra week to read this long-ass book! Something unexpected came up in our schedule and we had to shift this one from the last Tuesday of the month, to the last Monday of the month - June 30th. Hopefully everyone can still attend, but if you need to change your RSVP, please do so as soon as you know your schedule so that we can see as many of your lovely faces as possible!

Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his longing for his mother, he clings to the one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love--and at the center of a narrowing, ever more dangerous circle.

The Goldfinch is a mesmerizing, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate.

I screwed up--for some reason I got the email about The Goldfinch meetup being switched to "next Monday" yesterday, so I RSVPd without checking dates thinking that I could make it for NEXT Monday. Sorry for the no show.

Can I RSVP for my girlfriend and I. We're both reading the book?

I can totally read this in a week and a half, right? Right! If anyone who lives close-ish (West LA) has a copy I can borrow that would be even better.

You have more time! We had to change the date. Unfortunately, I've already passed my copy on. Good luck and hope you can come!

I'm scheduled to be out of town on the 24th and just realized that's the same day as this amazing book club. Unfortunately I will not be attending. I look forward to discussing Virgin Suicides in July.
Goldfinch is amazing and long. It was my first audible book, which has made the reading very different (and fun). I'm also reading the book too. I strongly suggest the audible. Have fun discussing.
