First published in 1993,

The Virgin Suicides

announced the arrival of a major new American novelist. In a quiet suburb of Detroit, the five Lisbon sisters--beautiful, eccentric, and obsessively watched by the neighborhood boys--commit suicide one by one over the course of a single year. As the boys observe them from afar, transfixed, they piece together the mystery of the family's fatal melancholy, in this hypnotic and unforgettable novel of adolescent love, disquiet, and death. Jeffrey Eugenides evokes the emotions of youth with haunting sensitivity and dark humor and creates a coming-of-age story unlike any of our time. Adapted into a critically acclaimed film by Sofia Coppola,

The Virgin Suicides

is a modern classic, a lyrical and timeless tale of sex and suicide that transforms and mythologizes suburban middle-American life.

Looking forward to discussing book. Such mixed emotions about it. In preparing for our evening I found this review.

I think someone asked me how the waiting list works, but I can't find the message so here's what I do:

    1. If you have ever RSVP'd yes and no show'd, I bump you off the list to give someone else the opp to come.

    2. As people unRSVP, you get automatically moved from the wait list to the yes list.

Again, read the book anyway, even tho there is currently a waitlist of 9 people--it always changes! Once we had a long waitlist and only 10 people ended up coming.

Also, I'm posting other fun events :)

Okay gay ladies, queerz and people who RSVP'd: get real with yo selves to make sure that you are 1) reading the book 2) will finish it in time for the meet-up and 3) will show up to book club. If not, no judgies, just un RSVP to allow someone else who has completed steps 1-3 the opp to come.

We know that we are really cool and you want to drink with us, so join us at Pantsuit tomorrow night! <3

I would like to bring my girlfriend as a plus 1, would that be possible? She is desperate to come...

Please have her join the group so that I can approve her membership. The book club meet-ups are at our house and we need to approve all the members. Also, right now, the RSVPs are full with a waiting list so she would only be able to come if lots of others dropped out.

However, you can both always join Pantsuit which is an event open to everyone hosted at The Must in DTLA.

Whew! Just removed over 100 members who have visited the our group (or come to a meet-up) in over a year. Interested in quality, not quantity! Remember, we take attendance at the book club meet-ups (not the other social events) and if you get 2 no-shows, you are out of the club.

    Thanks!

If you are new to the group and/or on the waiting list, please read the book anyway and plan to come. The RSVP list always changes a lot especially right before the meet-up and often the day of!

That being said, if you know you can't come, please update your RSVP accordingly to allow someone else the opportunity to come.

I do check and update attendance at the book club meet-ups at our house--and if you RSVP yes, and don't show up, I will mark you as a no-show and bump you off the list for future book club meet-ups--you will be let back on the YES list if there's room.

    Thanks!
