JS.LA: Rock Solid JS

Please RSVP at http://JS.LA if you plan on attending so we know how much food and drink to get.

JavaScript friends!

Next week, on Thursday, August 28th, JS.LA will be hosted at Maker Studios (map) in Culver City and will be sponsored by O'Reilly's Velocity Conference and Verizon EdgeCast.

This month, we'll be focusing on building rock-solid apps and running them in production:

Node.js in Production

Presented by: Jeff Dickey

Running Node.js in a production settings requires you to ensure stability, performance, security and maintainability—particularly challenging while the best practices in JavaScript change rapidly. Learn the pros and cons between various tools and providers whether it is deciding on a cloud provider, build system, load balancer and more. Learn about common mistakes made when moving from a development environment to production and ways to harden your system once it comes online.

Test-driven Development of Web Apps in Node.js

Presented by: Tommy Stanton

Node.js is a natural choice for anything HTTP, so it has quickly become popular for writing web applications. As a complement, the language offers viable means of conducting test-driven development (TDD). Some of the technologies covered in this talk will be: Express, SuperAgent, Mocha, and Chai. Tommy will explain TDD basics from a Node perspective, transitioning into real examples of clever ways to prove that a web app works as advertised. The result is a surge in programmer confidence and a foundation to ensure long-term software quality!

Last month's videos are up!

If you missed our last event at Two Bit Circus, or you just can't get over how awesome they were, check out the last two talks:

I was planning on going, but I will not be able to make it because when I downloaded the appointment to Outlook, it said that it will go until 10 PM. I have to go north on the 405 to get back to Van Nuys and at 10 PM many of the on-ramps are closed due to freeway construction. Just makes it run too late during the work week.

We usually are done at the venue by 9pm or so, and you're always free to leave early of course! But if you can stay, drinks.js after the event is one of the highlights of our monthly meetups.

Remember to RSVP at if you do decide to go!

Whats the parking like at Maker Studio? Is there a parking lot? Do we park on the street or pay for parking?

    August 28, 2014

    • Carlo F.

Maker Studios have told us our people are free to park in the lot at front (on National) as well as the lot to the South of the building. Otherwise look for paid parking around the neighborhood.

I am new to Node.js and know next to nothing about it. Would the meeting still be informative for me or would I need to have some expertise first?

    August 22, 2014

    • David G.

Absolutely attend. First, it's a great place to meet and talk to other Node.js developers which is always informative. Second, while the content of the talks may not be directly applicable to where you're at now, it definitely will be in the future.
