Mining Time Series Data with Sylvia Halasz of YP

Directions for Parking etc:

We are on the corner of Walnut and Lake Streets. When entering from Lake Street, please park in visitor parking in the structure to your right. When exiting the structure, turn to your left where you will see an OpenX table. This is where you will sign in and enter the meet-up. Please be sure to bring your ticket with you so we can validate your parking.

Be sure to enter the parking lot from the Lake Street side. If you enter on the other side, you won't see the reception table and you will probably be lost.

There will be Pizza/soda/beer

Sylvia's abstract:

First I will give an overview of dimensionality reduction (representation) methods; then I will concentrate on anomaly detection and forecasting. I will present new results from the literature using Ensemble Adjustment Kalman Filters and some of my results on change point detection and handling sparse time series in forecasting. Most of the examples use public health and internet data.

Dr. Halasz has a professor's experiences and it shows, for better and for worse. Very, very intelligent woman with a lifetime of experience.

Sylvia Halasz presented an uneasy time series data science model in a simplified and understandable manner.

Had a great time talking with Moira, Xiwu, Rob and Andy; the talk was enjoyable, too.

I'm gonna be 20 minutes late... Will there be a problem getting in?

I've come down with a cold and that's one thing I don't want to share. I hope there will be other such events in Pasadena - I was so looking forward to this one.

OpenX is also one block from the Gold Line station at Lake. That's another option for getting here.

Hello, I'm interested in this topic, but I'm in Santa Monica. Will there be a stream provided, and can the slides be posted?

Looks like I won't be able to make it tonight after all :-(

Question: Do you mean the century square building visitor parking lot ?
Also, is there a bldg name; room number location for the meetup ?

    Thanks for the event arrangements.

It's the One West Bank building, not Century Square -- the parking lot entrances are right next to each other, though, so be careful!

The talk itself will not be very technical, but if you want to read some technical background literature, then look at: "An Ensemble Adjustment Kalman Filter for Data Assimilation" by J.L Anderson in the Monthly Weather Review 2001 and "Forecasting Seasonal Outbreaks of Influenza" by J Shaman and A Karspeck in PNAS 2012. - Sylvia Halasz

Yay something local! Will be there! Oh, is there any preliminary reading that you would recommend for novices (my background is in glm regression, anova, factor analysis, and structural modeling)

My first time series analysis was of a soft vs. hard taco binge competition.
