Data Science @ Factual

Tom White

The availability of great tools have made it easier to create Machine Learning models without domain expertise. However, most of these tools will likely not provide a turnkey solution for your exact problem. In this talk, I will cover the sometimes interesting, sometimes pedantic work that is involved as we feed and care for our own selected in-house tools: vowpal wabbit and fest.

Bio: Tom White studied visual design and user interaction at the MIT media lab, and has since been prototyping emerging technologies at various Los Angeles establishments. Tom enjoys exploring the intersection of computation, visual design, interaction, and machine learning. He currently works at Factual on their Geopulse products, which use machine learning in analyzing billions of daily records to label geo-behavioral patterns.

About Factual: Factual's location platform enriches mobile location signals with definitive global data, enabling personalized and contextually relevant mobile experiences. Built from billions of inputs, the data is constantly updated by Factual’s real-time data stack.

Thank you Szilard and Factual for hosting the meet up. And, thank you Tom White for an excellent presentation. This was my first meet-up with this group. Looking forward to the next one.

Location: Factual is at 1999 Avenue of the Stars. There has been confusion on this, since we used to be at 1801 Avenue of the Stars. We are now at 1999, which is the Sun America building

Hi Szilard, similar to Yael, I did get in the waiting list on the eventbrite but I don't see it in my list. Perhaps waiting lists don't show up?

    July 16, 2014

    • Szilard P.

The way Eventbrite waiting list works is that you sign up for the waiting list and when there is a free spot Eventbrite sends you a special link and using that you need to register within a given time period (usually 1 day). If you miss that time window that spot is offered to the next person on in the waiting list.

Thanks a lot Szilard. Got it.

    I'm sorry, I can't make it. How do I un-RSVP on EventBrite?

    July 10, 2014

    • Szilard P.

Excellent question! You need to create an Eventbrite account associated with the email you RSVPed with (no worries, it's a few clicks), then you will see all the events you RSVPed with that email, and finally you can select one event and cancel it. To create an account just go to You need to do this only one time and it will be handy in the future since we'll keep using Eventbrite for RSVPs.
