Kerntastic+++ Rafting, Natural Water Slides, Giant Trees & Catchphrase [CPT]

Since the trip is near, send me an email with your phone number by 2pm Fri 7-29 if you'd like to attend.

This July 29-31 let's do some camping and rafting! We'll drive up Friday, camp Fri & Sat nights, and drive back Sunday. On this trip we'll go rafting down the Kern River with professional guides, take an easy stroll among giant trees 1,500 years old and 20 feet thick, and hang out around the campfire where we'll roast marshmallows for smores and play games like Catchphrase and Twister. At our camping area where we'll be able to see and hear the river we'll have porta-potties and a hot shower. This trip is all about having a good time and meeting fun people, so think of everyone as a new friend. :)

For rafting on Sunday we'll have four groups. The beginner-friendly Class III Single group will do the Class III rapids run and will finish in one hour. The beginner-friendly Class III Double group will do the same Class III rapids run two times in a row and will finish in 2.5 hours. The beginner-friendly Class IV group will do rapids up to Class IV and will finish in[masked] hours - no experience necessary. The advanced Class V group will do rapids up to Class V and will finish in 7-8 hours with lunch included (wetsuits required). All Class V rafters must be physically fit and good swimmers.

Kids must be at least 6 years for the Class III run, 12 for the Class IV run, and 16 for the Class V run and must weigh at least 50 lbs. Sorry, no dogs for this event. Click this link for the current weather in Kernville.

----CAMPING----
We'll be camping in a secret "dispersed" area with two porta-potties, not in a developed campground, so we can put our tents any place we've claimed, and we can make noise and spread out. We'll have a hot shower going for Saturday night as well as a hand washing station. We'll be camping next to our cars. The dirt road to our camping area was recently graded and all cars will do fine on it.

----RAFTING----
The guides won't allow sandals or bare feet. You'll need a second pair of shoes that won't fall off to get wet ($15 at most sporting goods stores). Life jackets & helmets are provided. Wet suits are optional and can be rented for $19 though not needed for the Class III runs. Rafting times are approximate and may increase or decrease based on how fast the river's flowing and that day's conditions. Leave everything you don't want to get wet in your car and leave your keys with the front desk. If you feel like it the guides accept tips.

----FOOD----
Eat dinner on your way up Fri night. Bring food for breakfast and lunch on Sat & breakfast on Sun. We'll be eating in restaurants on Saturday evening. There are restaurants and markets nearby.

----WHAT TO BRING----
Shoes you can get wet, one gallon of drinking water per person per day, water bottle, snacks, comfortable shoes to hike in, food for breakfast & lunch on Sat & breakfast on Sun, warm clothes for night time, flashlight, sunscreen, sun glasses, hat, camera, one camp chair per person, and camping gear (sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tent). Email me if you won't have a camp chair or need space in someone else's tent.
- Sleeping bag: 0-30 degrees rating, rent, or buy for around $30 at Costco, Big 5, Sport Chalet, Target
- Sleeping Pad: rent, or buy for around $10 for a foam pad at an army surplus store
- Tent: borrow, make friends with someone with extra space, rent, or purchase for under $40. This Stansport Olympus is my favorite.
- Flashlight: Purchase at 99 Cent Store
- RENT: rent these items at REI, Adventure 16, Sport Chalet

----DIRECTIONS----
Will email directions & my phone number to the Yes list on Thursday June 30th.

----CARPOOLING----
I will help you find a carpool. There will likely be carpools from all over Socal. Additionally, feel free to post a comment here with whether you're looking to ride or drive along with where you'll be coming from and how many people you can take.
