Tips and tricks

We'll have 5+ talks 10 min each. Initially I thought of tips for beginners, but based on the descriptions I got so far from those who volunteered for speaking, there will be some more advanced things as well.

So far 7 people volunteered, of which 2 cannot make it for the date chosen. Therefore, we can still accommodate 1-2 speakers, so if you'd like to give a short talk, please email Szilard.

Talks:

Eric Klusman: "Introduction to R for the experienced SAS user"

Jeremy Miles: "Everything is data: How R makes you think differently, and why this is a good thing (compared to SPSS/SAS/Stata)"

Szilard Pafka: "Q & A with Szilard"

Tim Triche: "Welcome to the Inferno (or, Map-Reduce in R)"

Joshua Wiley: "Getting help in R"

Update: another volunteer speaker/talk:

Wayne Smith: "Learning R: Sensible Conventions and Pedagogical Decisions"

Timeline:

- 6:15pm pizza arrives and networking

- 7:00pm talks start promptly

Please arrive by 6:55pm the latest.

Please RSVP as places are limited.

Venue: Adconion Media Group (3301 Exposition Blvd, Santa Monica). They will kindly validate parking and provide pizza and drinks (big thanks to Mikhail and AMG for that and for providing the place).

At the last R Meetup, there was some brief mention of the new Julia "technical computing" language. The Julia folks have just posted some videos (both introductory and more advanced) from a Julia workshop/tutorial held this past January at MIT. See:

Great meeting. This was the first time I attended a meeting of this group and it was even better than I had hoped for.

It was great to see the different information that different presenters thought most important for beginners/early intermediate R users. I will be consulting the suggested materials and web sites.

Sorry, but an unexpected something came up and I won't be able to make this much anticipated event. I will be looking over the slides from each of the presenters closely. Have a really good night!

      Hi Wayne,
Speaking as someone who has historically used variable.names.separated.by.dots, and more recently switched to variableNamesInVariableCase, the latter can save some really annoying problems with S3 generics. Just a thought... also, great slides. :-)

Thanks for the presentation Wayne! Got some great information I'll be digesting.. especially nice to see the functionality, not just some script excerpts. I opened up my rsvp for someone who can more benefit from the other presentations, as I got out of Wayne's presentation the exposure I was seeking from attending the meeting.
