Statistics and Big Data at Google

Statistics and Big Data at Google

Tim Hesterberg, Google

Google lives on data. Search, Ads, YouTube, Maps, ... - they all live on data. I'll tell some stories about how Google uses data and statistics, how Google is always experimenting to make improvements (yes, this includes your searches), and how Google adapts statistical ideas to do things that have never been done before.

Bio:

Dr. Tim Hesterberg is a Senior Ads Quality Statistician at Google. He previously worked at Insightful (S-PLUS). He received his Ph.D. In Statistics from Stanford University under Brad Efron. He is co-author of Chihara and Hesterberg, Mathematical Statistics with Resampling and R, Wiley (2011). His interests include resampling, regularized regression, missing data, and sequential designs.

He is a Sierra Club leader, does water bottle rockets with kids, and has led trips of high school students setting up computer labs in Guatemala, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. http://www.timhesterberg.net

Great event, and hope to see more R events on this side of the LA, and you are all welcome to our Open Data meetup in Glendale, http://www.meetup.com/LA-Open-Data/.

Would that be possible to have Tim post his slides? And is the Bootstrap package being released by next week. Couldn't wait to see it. Because of the syntax, I hardly use boot, I would rather write my own bootstrap function. Can't wait to explore the functionality of Tim's Bootstrap package.

Really educational to see how a huge company like google uses Statistics. Liked the idea of always and ongoing experiments, even for small incremental gain. Much thanks to Tim Hesterberg.

I thought all the examples were great, and Tim was extremely clear. Thanks Tim and Pete for speaking and hosting us at Google! I also learned a new term... it was inspiring to learn about "Dog Fooding".

For tonight @Google, please "enter at the walk in gate at the south east corner of the Google offices (Hampton and Sunset) and there is a large walk-in gate on Sunset where there will be a security guard. There is a large roll-up garage-style door where we'll have a table set up to check people in and give them their name badges."

    Hi Szilard!

I'll no longer able to go due last minute changes in my schedule. I will be giving my RSVP so another person can attend. I'd like to say thank you either way for getting this event together.

As you might have noticed meetup.com has been DDoS-ed and down for most of the last 3 days. I have prepared for the worse:

    1. Please follow me on Twitter @DataScienceLA (Szilard), I'll post updates about the events and the final RSVP lists there (make sure you are on it, otherwise you'll not be able to pass security).

    2. I have just saved the current RSVP list right now, so in case meetup.com is down, we'll have to go with the one as of now.

hope I can get through the waiting list. Do we have a way to know what position we are on the waiting list?

I think I might have accidentally just RSVP'd twice. I understand there will be a waiting list so if I have, can someone clear (just one, not both) of my RSVPs to make room for someone else. (NOTE: I will still be coming. Just not two of me.) Thanks

    January 24, 2014

    • - Szilard Pafka -

No worries, you'll take only one spot no matter how many times you hit RSVP.

      January 24, 2014

  • William Q.

Can't wait to meet the community!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
