LA Meets OC
Ok everybody - it is time for a picnic to celebrate the coming of Spring! The Russian American Club and the Russian Club OC are having a GRAND (combined) picnic halfway between Orange County and Los Angeles. This picnic will be a wonderful opportunity to meet and greet our Orange County neighbors in the Russian Club OC. If you are a member of both clubs, you choose which one to enter your RSVP.
The above wonderful sign was made for the picnic by Kyria (Russian Club OC)
The picnic will be in a beautiful park that is actually a nature preserve in Palos Verdes. Our picnic table will be on a high bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean that encompasses a view of Catalina Island which is just 20 miles across the sea. There is ample parking, indoor toilets, and picnic tables, but no drinking fountains or water. Alcohol is allowed but no smoking or fires of any sort, including bbqs. Dogs are not allowed. Parking costs $5. 00 per car, but if someone in the car is over 55, the whole car gets in for free. When you enter, the person at the gate asks the driver for his/her name and phone number. Look for our white canopy (and club banners) to help you find our group at the site.
Please bring already prepared foods to share (and when you RSVP, please say what food you are planning to bring so others can see and plan what they will bring). There is a $2.00 cover charge per person ($1.00 for students and seniors) for this event to cover the cost of paper goods and utensils, and to help cover the website fees for our group. Also, please bring chairs to sit in and if you have a folding table to put food on, that would be helpful. It’s a good idea to bring a hat and/or sunscreen, and jacket since it can get cold in the afternoons.
For those who want to hike, there are trails that lead along the bluffs and also down to the beach and tide pools below. Since it is a nature preserve, collecting of shells or any other items is forbidden. All ages are welcome. There is a lot of wildlife to see— many rabbits and ground squirrels make their homes in burrows in the picnic grounds, and there are hawks, pelicans, and other birds to see. There is even a chance of seeing migrating whales and other sea mammals like sea lions and dolphins. Cell reception in the area is good. Picnic will start at 1:30 PM; the entry gate closes at 4:00 PM but if you are already inside, it is possible to stay until one hour past sunset.
