Prasan Samtani is a Software Developer at Hulu working on the Metrics Platform. He was introduced to Scala by a former colleague and has been hooked ever since.
The metrics team at Hulu is responsible for processing and analyzing a very large volume of data (gigabytes of data/hour). Our data analytics platform at Hulu is built on Hadoop, an open-source framework that provides a distributed filesystem (HDFS), and a programming model for distributed computing (MapReduce). We use Scala extensively in conjunction with Hadoop, especially in the area of scheduling and monitoring.
This meetup will discuss the use of Scala at Hulu, and focus specifically on two interesting problems. The first involves an in-house extension to Scala's Slick ORM, and the second involves the use of parser combinators to tackle the creation of design languages that provide a higher degree of expressivity than writing Java MapReduce code.
Hulu is a website and over the top subscription service offering ad-supported on-demand streaming video of TV shows, movies, and other new media, trailers, clips, and behind-the-scenes footage from NBC, Fox, ABC, TBS, and many other networks and studios.
