Chicken Processing Class

  • May 19, 2013 · 2:30 PM

Sam will be leading a class to show how to process a chicken while treating the animal with respect. $30 class fee. Proceeds to help kickstart the Institute of Urban Ecology's new animal husbandry operations.

Visit for more info.

Depending on the response, each participant will have their own chicken to work on. Option to buy organic, soy-free fed, spent layers for $20 additional after the processing--good for the stockpot.

Bring a sharp paring knife, tweezers, cutting board for raw meat & nitrile/latex gloves if you wish. Come in clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.

I'm so bummed I missed this! I really wanted to go. I guess that's what I get for not checking my email :(

Ok, I did not attend the class because I am a weenie..... with that being said, I am not a vegetarian and enjoy eating fresh chicken. I will have about 6 or 7 roosters that need processing. I would be willing to give 1/2 of birds to the processor. Also do you have a fee for processing. New to group. Not trying to take advantage of services just curious. Thank you

This is the same day as the Potluck event in Encino, which we have been planning for months. Would you consider postponing to another day when more of us coould attend?

I was not aware of another LAUCE event on the same day. It was not my intention to cause a conflict; I simply have meat birds that are ready and thought it might be a good opportunity to teach others in the process. There will be other classes offered in the near future.

Awesome Sam. Thanks for offering this. We are interested in learning how to cull and process for meat as well. I will keep an eye open for this class in the future. :)

Are you reincarnated Old Dick Potter the Chicken Plucker (he plucked his life away)?
By process do you mean dress -- slaughter, pluck, and gut?
I let my spent layers grow into old biddies. One of my old girls is twelve years old. She surprised me this spring by laying and setting on a clutch of eggs! Sometimes she crows and fights like a rooster. She must be the Betty Friedan of Chickendom; Old Hens Rule! I would never dream of killing her and using her for the stock pot.

We so wish we could be there, darn anyway! We'll put it on FB in case someone else is interested and can attend.

    Hope it's great!

I really wish I could attend this class. My husband is out of town and I would like him to do this with me. :). Will you be doing this class again?
