Torrance To Allow Chicken and Beekeeping?

Roberta, hi! I wanted to find out if anyone from the LAUCE could speak at a meeting next week in Torrance. My city is considering allowing the keeping of chickens and bees in our yards, glory be should they approve it!! I also need to know if Backwards Bees could speak also at the same meeting. This would be magnificent and I would surely appreciate any leads on speakers you could give me! Please email me at [masked]. Many, many thanks in advance, and I am STILL enjoying that chard!

    Emily,
That was a great moment. I hope it is not a year! They kept talking about how much work the business plan was and how much they needed to get done, I hope that wasn't just those few things? From what I gathered this issue is now going to be put on the agenda for the city council to hold a hearing. I guess we will have to keep up and see when this happens. We will definitely need Bee "EXPERTS" to answer all the scary bee questions. And have as many positive people there in favor of chickens!

Thanks so much to everyone for taking time out to attend. I loved the growing look of surprise on the speaker's face as he went through each of the first four issues on the agenda and received no comments from the gallery - making it clear that we were all there for chickens and bees! ;o)

From the final commentary in the meeting it sounded like it will be at least a year before any laws are passed, unfortunately. But at least we're making progress in the right direction!

When will we know for sure whether or not chickens and bees have been legalized in Torrance?

I attended this meeting and was glad to see so many people there from the community in support of bees and chickens. I am confused though. Bees are specifically prohibited in the city ordinances, but chickens are not. "Farm animals" is the term used but only pigs and cows are named. I know several people in Torrance who have been keeping chickens for years, with and without a permit from the city.

Please do attend the June 11th meeting! There will be extremely limited time for public comment at that meeting, but there will be a "raise of hands" of who is attending the meeting in support of urban chicken keeping. (I asked them to put this on the agenda, so please don't let me down!!)

The June 11th meeting is designed to have the city council approve or deny further investigation by the environmental commission into the issue. If there is no public showing, there is a chance that the council out of ignorance could simply deny any further research in the matter, and chickens will not even get a shot at legalization.

The commission informed me that if you would like to be heard by city council (esp. if it sounds in the 5:30 meeting like the issue might get dropped) we can stick around for the 7PM meeting where there will be more time for public comment.

I'll be there! (BTW, does this mean that the meeting today, June 6th has been cancelled?)
