Chicken & duck friends meet up - Glendale

Update:  Here is my # in case anyone needs to call or text!  :)  (818)[masked]

Hi everyone, I'm looking forward to our backyard MeetUp potluck at my house in Glendale this Saturday! Limited to perhaps 30 attendees due to limited parking, I suggest friends please carpool.  Whoever arrives first and isn't leaving early, you are welcome to park in my driveway, just pull up as far as you can behind each car to make room for several cars in driveway please. If you have to leave early however please park on street.

Things we'll need:

1) 20+ fold up chairs and/or benches for sitting.
2) Potluck food, a few bags of ice, drinking water, soda and/or juice to share.

A few ideas for Sat. 9/21 meetup:

1) I'll have an optional sign-up sheet for you to list your email address so that we can swap emails amongst each other for sending info discussed at our Meet Up group.

2) If you have helpful tips you'd like to share, please bring a printout that you can read to the group (and email everyone copies later) or you can pass out copies.

3) Networking - If anyone has a business or something you'd like to network amongst the group, we can set time around 2:00 for everyone to introduce ourselves & talk about what projects you have going on or need help with.

4) Urban chicken keeping legal topics - since many of us live in towns where our city's ordinances are confusing or questionable and our flocks are at risk of being evicted, please bring any info or knowledge you may have to share. (i.e. City doesn't allow chickens because they claim manure seeps into ground water. Or - Your city's ordinance doesn't make sense and you think you have a valid case while the city's ordinances you feel are contradictory).

5) Come make new friends, new chicken baby sitting pals, network, swap knowledge, share food, and have a fun day!  :)

Nice to meet you all. and I hope we meet again soon!
Since so many of you are from neighborhoods within LA I thought you might like to see the ordinance that covers chicken keeping in LA. It reads in part:
"Proximity (25 ft away from owner's dwelling, 35 ft from other residences), sanitation, noise, and zoning restrictions apply."
Otherwise there is no limit on number of birds unless there is a different zoning law in place in your neighborhood, and, yes, 1 rooster is allowed.
Glendale is a lot stricter: city ordinance[masked] reads:
"No person shall keep any animal, wild or domestic, other than cats, dogs, canaries or birds of the psittacinae family, or a combined total of no more than two (2) of any combination of rabbits, chickens (other than roosters), ducks or pigeons within fifty (50) feet of any residence or dwelling house or other building used for the habitation of human beings, or within one hundred fifty (150) feet of any school, hospital, or similar institution"

Sorry, but I won't be able to attend after all due to issues at home. See you next time!

I wish our street were owned by the city/county but alas, it is privately owned by the homeowners so we have to repair and maintain the street ourselves!

I'm so sad i can't make it :( Susan the duckies are humongous and i'm sure they would like to see their second mommy again soon.

ooo i should take some pictures. They are so big!! No idea if they are girls or boys but they sound and look like twins. I saw some ducks at a pond and thought they would love going. I wonder if they could come back to me though....

I saw a YouTube video of some very tame pet ducks, where the owners raised them and held them constantly as they grew up, had duck diapers for them because they kept them inside sometimes when they were young. They filmed taking them to a lake. They threw the ducks above the pond so the ducks would fly a little and land in the water, but the ducks can squawking back to them asap! They didn't even stay to enjoy the lake for a minute. I'm guessing it could be like this, one extreme or the other. If a pet duck enjoyed the lake, I have a feeling they wouldn't come back. Your babies are half Rouen (can't fly) and half Mallard (can fly 100%), so you won't know if they can fly until they're older.

I am sure the event was great and did anyone take pictures?

    September 22, 2013

    • Susan J.

Hi Karin, yes Maelane was kind enough to take photos, she did a great job! Although I'm not sure if we can post them here. I'm going to have another MeetUp this Sunday!

      September 23, 2013

  • Lisa H.

Susan, do you still need me to bring s table? I have two tables but I think only one will fit in my car.

    September 20, 2013

    • Lisa H.

My street is being worked on so there is no way I can get my car close to my house to load a table today.

      September 21, 2013

    • Lisa H.

      Thanks Susan.

      September 21, 2013

  • Karin D.

Sorry Sue and group - one of my furry friends is sick and I will be at the vets and taking care of them. I was sooooooooooooo looking forward to being there. Take pictures.... Karin:(

    September 21, 2013

  • Elisa H.

We are taking our daughters dog to the vet for her so have to change our response. We will attend another meet up soon.

Sorry, I can't make it. My granddaughter's birthday party has been changed and now conflicts with meetup.

Hi Monique, ok maybe next time if I throw another one! :) Happy Birthday to your grandpa!! :)

      September 21, 2013

  • Peter

Hi Susan! I know you wanted to limit to 30 guests, just wondering if you have room for one more and if so, what would you like me to bring? Thank you!

    1 · September 16, 2013

    • Susan J.

Hi Peter, I don't have a strict limit, plus I'm guessing some folks won't be able to go last minute. The only concern is limited parking in my neighborhood. You can bring a chair and maybe a few 50Cent jugs of drinking water or a few bags of ice. I will break out my cooler. That'd be awesome :)

      September 17, 2013

    • Peter

I will bring 2 bags of ice. Let me know if that is enough or if more is needed! (:

      September 21, 2013

  • Deborah B.

Sorry I can't make it that afternoon

    August 30, 2013

    • Susan J.

Hi Deborah, I wasn't sure if you saw that the event was changed to this coming Saturday, 9/21. If you can't make it, hope to see you at another one :)

      September 17, 2013

    • Deborah B.

Thanks for following up. I was good to go until it was changed to 9/21.

Sorry now I must change my RSVP. I am stuck with my two kids 8 and 3 and the 3 y.o can be too much of a busy body. Hope everyone has a good time!

Hi everyone, I've picked 9/15 for a MeetUp date, hoping it'll be less hot in 2 or 3 weeks. 1) What is a good time to start? 1pm? 2pm-7pm? 2) Also, please suggest ideas for what we should do.. talk about, etc. 3) Let's make this a potluck :) Does anyone want to bring paper plates, napkins, paper towels, drinks?

    August 29, 2013

    • Alma

I can bring the paper goods! This will be my first meet up and I am very excited to meet everyone. Thank you so much for hosting!!

    September 9, 2013

Hi, you can bring a chair for yourself, and a reusable plate, fork & cup since we're trying to cut down on paper waste. If you have some beverages you want to bring like water, soda or juice to share, that would be cool too. It's a potluck. :)

      September 14, 2013

  • Lisa H.

The 8th was okay. I am going to the same canning workshop on the 15th so the 15th won't work unless it is in the late pm.

    1 · August 29, 2013

    • Susan J.

Oh shoot, ok well the date isn't set in stone. I'm just concerned about these triple digit temperatures. It was 102 yesterday in Glendale! What do you think about 9/21?

      August 30, 2013

    • Lisa H.

Alma, the canning workshop is offered to members of RIPE, a produce exchange for residents of Altadena.

      September 2, 2013

  • Chris

Thanks Susan. I agree about the zero waste effort! We have 7 chickens and one currently with an injured leg. Three are producing eggs daily and the others should start up any day now barring this heat. I agree 9/21 works best so far yet although I will be able to make it, my wife will not (USC vs Utah) as she is the Sustainable Programs Manager she is working shift the tailgates and stadium efforts towards zero waste. So I hope to meet as many of you as I can for her sake.

I always bring my dish or bowl and a pair of chopsticks to every pot luck

      4 · August 30, 2013

  • Susan J.

Hi everyone, since many of you guys are attending a canning meet on the 15th, I've set this for 9/21. It's been triple digits in Glendale so I don't think it's wise for making this 9/8, it'll still be too hot next week. Also, Pye suggests everyone bring plates and serve-ware to practice zero waste, which is a great idea. You can bring your own serve ware, and Alma has kindly offered to bring paper goods which we can use as needed since I'm sure half will forget and we'll need back up :) Please post suggestions for topic discussions and/or whoever has topics that you'd like to address and speak about. I have no plans or topics to go over so far, just a meet and greet.

    3 · August 30, 2013

  • Pye

I suggest to practice zero waste, bring our own plate, silverware.

Either date is good for me tho the 15th would be better.

    August 29, 2013

  • Deborah B.

    I prefer the 8th also

    1 · August 29, 2013

  • Chris

We too have a RIPE Canning workshop that early afternoon 9/15.

    August 29, 2013

  • Deborah B.

I have dinner plans on the 15th so for me earlier is better. But if the majority prefer later that day, I'll see you at the next meetup

    August 29, 2013

  • Susan J.

Hi everyone, I'm trying to set the date for Sunday 9/8 but it's not letting me save a date. I may need to delete and recreate, unless someone knows why the site keeps saying "there's a problem saving... " ?

    August 28, 2013

    • Roberta K.

OK susan, you should be able to changes things. I put a random time so please change at will. Thank you so much for posting. As a host you should be able to do anything and if you can't let me know.

      August 21, 2013

Anything from the 8th through 18th is good for me except the evening of the 14th. I think you can just use butcher paper/paper painter's tarp/plastic from Home Depot, with thick, blue painter's tape to protect your carpet.
