Creating Native Habitats and Including Chickens

Come for a fun meetup to learn what it takes to be a certified wildlife habitat at home and to see what she has done herself. Sylvia will have National Wildlife Habitat applications available because you are sure to be inspired.

Sylvia came to the Green Booth at the Mar Vista Farmer's Market and proudly showed us the new coop that she and her husband created. She will also review how they planned and built their chicken coop and will give some pointers if you are getting ready to start keeping chickens.

Street parking is available and there are no restrictions. There are lots of spaces on Beethoven around the corner. They are located just three houses from the intersection of Rose ,Beethoven, and Morningside Way.

Feel free to bring your own folding chair.  A bleach dip for your feet will be mandatory for biosecurity so wear appropriate shoes.  Please also wear freshly washed clothes that have not been in contact with your chickens.

I was very impressed with Sylvia's presentation and learned a great deal about native plants and loved hearing about how to came to having chickens. It was also special to be able to see a second coop the same day. A mini coop tour. Nice group of people. Thank you again. It was a wonderful event.

Great experience for those interesed in chickens...but especially for people interested in establishing a Certified Natural Wildlife Habitat in their garden. Learned a lot. Sylvia had the entire program well planned, complete with handouts and sources for obtaining California natives and free mulch. We ended the day with a visit to her daughter's coop...turned into a two coop event! Well attended...started and ended on a timely basis. Great job, Sylvia!

I've found that many people don't show who RSVP so if there are just a couple on the wait list you can come. There is no charge, this is all thanks to Sylvia's wonderful hospitality. She hasn't even been to a meetup but was eager to just jump in and help.

    Thanks Sylvia for hosting. :)

Roberta said I could bring a +1...but now she can't attend. So even though she wasn't added into the count, maybe anyone on the waiting list can plug in! Looking forward to a great day!

I am new to the group and am not quite ready to get chickens yet. Actually, I am renting so I am not sure of the laws in the area I am renting in. I miss my fresh eggs from my yard in CO. Does anyone near west LA or Santa Monica have fresh home-grown eggs to sell? My daughter is allergy to soy so the chickens cannot have eaten soy feed. You can contact me directly at my email [masked]
    Thanks!

I'm new to chicken protocol. What footwear is appropriate for this bleach dip?

    October 15, 2013

    • Roberta K.

Something that you wouldn't mind splashed with some bleach. Closed toe is better so tennis shoes, boots, something with a waterproof sole. The dip is about half an inch deep.

Sylvia said that we might also be able to visit her daughter's house in Santa Monica afterwards depending on the time. Her coop is maybe in more grand. :) Thanks Sylvia. Will be discussed depending on how things go.

Hey Everyone! I wanted to attend, but something came up... I hope somebody else can take my spot.

We did not plan on free range chickens but since everyone gets along -- dogs, cats and chickens -- we love having them out in the yard. Now for a few adjustments to our landscaping...

I visited a nutritionist's home in Manhattan Beach that had been dedicated as a NWH with chickens free ranging in the front yard! It was beautiful...and so interesting to see everything working together. Can't wait!

i think the chickens are still in a coop/run most of the day. It will be interesting to see how it could be possible

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
