Backyard Flock Diseases

We are very fortunate to have Janet Moore, a veterinary pathologist, come and speak to us. She is from the UC Davis San Bernandino location of the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory. This is the lab where you can have your chickens examined by necropsy for cause of death. This will be a special opportunity to find out more about what diseases they are seeing in backyard flocks. She will help us understand the reports that are given on birds that have been sent in.

Janet has her own three hens, Matilda, Lucy and Ethel, so she's one of us and understand how it is to love chickens. Hope you can make it.

One of the papers we received stated that the following vets have agreed to provide BYC enthusiasts with email consultations free of charge and asked that you copy Dr. Moore on your correspondence:

    [masked] (Dr. Mark Bland)

    [masked] (Dr. Maurice Pitesky)

Did say they were busy so there may be a delay in their their response.

    Should be a great resource!

No problem! I posted on the message board, as well.

Hi Karen, for those of us who were on the waiting list or unable to attend, would you please share the email? Thanks!

It was great! Very good information. The highlight was finding out email addresses where we can ask questions of chicken vets for free!

Janet provided a wonderful, thoughtful and thoroughly educational presentation. I was impressed and grateful that Janet volunteered to spend her valuable time with us.

Hello! I am new to this forum. Have been raising chickens for two years now. Would love to meet people who enjoy raising and caring for chickens as well. Is it too late to RSVP for this event?

    May 2, 2014

  • Ann

I'll wait for the next event. This location is a little further from my place.

    April 29, 2014

  • Roberta K.

Parking is street so get there a bit early to find a spot. The location is near a hiking spot and parking can sometimes be a little tricky.

    April 29, 2014

  • Roberta K.

Does anyone have a recent necropsy report that they would like reviewed? If yes, please email me a PDF so that we can share it with our presenter.

    April 29, 2014

  • Roberta K.

FYI, there are a lot of seats but I imagine some people will need to stand along the outer wall. I wouldn't advise coming late.

I OFFER YOU MY UNIQUE LOCATION Come to Silverlake, right by the reservoir I have a beautiful hillside with my grazing sheep, just bring me some chickens in exchange please, I need to build a new flock to keep my LGD happy. Hope I post this in time

    April 13, 2014

    • Karin D.

wow Rosa! you have sheep! is there any way to organize a visit to your idyllic location? thanks much, Karin

      April 25, 2014

    • Roberta K.

I agree, Rosa, if you want to host a meet up that would be a great way to start. I found a hen sitting on eggs and i will remove them unless someone would like some lap chickens.

This is for sure? Be there at 1pm? Someone is not playing games? Please tell me this is true. The last I heard is it was rescheduled to September. I need the class since I now have a large group of girls and need help ASAP. Youtube just isn't enough. Thanks in advance.

There are two events that will be identical presentations. The second event has an unknown date and location. This one is set. We have our speaker and location confirmed. Yeah!!!

Hi-is there a location yet? Is this likely to be re-scheduled again?

San Marino library has a fairly big conference room too.

Janet has offered to do the talk twice to accommodate everyone. I'm working on the dates and location but I should have it firmed up in the next week. Phew.

By chance can anyone get to the La Pintoresca Branch library in pasadena tomorrow or the main library, Wed, to drop ff the form needed to reserve the room. Seems like that will be the only way to make sure that the form gets to the right people. Unfortunately i can't get away from work during when they are open. 1355 North Raymond Avenue Pasadena, CA 91103

    • Roberta K.

Thanks to Laura for oferring but I think we're going to go ahead and reschedule and set two dates to accommodate everyone and firm up the location. So sorry for the last minute changes ups.

    Roberta,
Did you try the San Rafael Library? It's on the southwest side of Pasadena. Very easy to find, with a nice meeting room that should be available.

    March 24, 2014

  • Roberta K.

I have potential spot in Pasadena. I will follow tues.

    1 · March 24, 2014

  • Erica L.

Such an important topic! Now that I have chickens myself, I'm not going on any more coop tours (or if I do, I'll be bleaching my shoes before getting anywhere near my girls. I can rent halls in Manhattan Beach but it's about $75-$100 (I can't remember the exact amount for a 2 hours (2 hour minimum).

    March 24, 2014

  • Roberta K.

OK chicken people. I have a problem with out meet up. The Pasadena Library didn't get my scheduling request. :( I'm hoping to use the room in the future but for now I'm hoping we can find another location. ANYONE know of an auditorium at a school, etc that would let us bring a big group?

    March 19, 2014

    • Roberta K.

maybe a community room in the Pasadena area. I know of places in other cities. :(

      March 19, 2014

    • JJ

If Pasadena is not critical, the USS Iowa in San Pedro has large interior meeting spaces, and plenty of parking. If you are interested, let me know what you know, and I can find out what does and doesn't work.

    would lilke to attend

  • Beatriz N.

I'm on the waiting list, but would also like to take my chicken friend who is my chicken mentor. Problem is she's deaf and reads lips... will there be handouts or a slide presentation?

    February 17, 2014

    • Roberta K.

SOrry for the late reply. There will be a short slide presentation. I'm sure we can find a space in front for your mentor. But I think we won't be able to take people off the waiting list.

I am ready to order a coop but very confused as to what kind to get. Is is more important to have a larger coop or a bigger run? I'm planning on 4-5 chickens -- any recommendations on a good source for pullets? Thank you!

    February 21, 2014

    • Roberta K.

It might be easier to decide if you saw some examples. If you have some time to decide, you should take a look at some. Coop(hen house is what I think you mean) is for night time and laying and the run is for the day. If they will be kept inside all the time and won't free range, it's important for the run to be as big as possible. There are some easy coops to see. Michelterona School in Silverlake has one that everyone can see.

  • Timothy M D.

Sounds like it will be a very interesting meeting, I haven't been to a meeting in a while, so, I am looking forward to it. I am excited, I have an incubator with 36 French Copper Maran eggs, Wade Jean hens crossed with a Bev Davis Rooster, and 21, F1 olive eggers planned to hatch this thursday.

Oops the room holds 35. Didn't realize so many would want to come. Im going to hope for the usual self triage.... just in case ill look for a bigger room.

    February 15, 2014

    • Roberta K.

Eeek! I think we'll pass on that. Thanks for the offer though.

      February 16, 2014

    • Cynthia

Roberta - I think you should stick with the original plan. Not everyone who rsvp'd will show up, and if they do, we'll just be a packed room, which is a compliment to the speaker.

    Thanks for organizing this, Roberta!

    February 14, 2014

The La Canada Library has a meeting room which can be reserved and used for free. I suspect the Pasadena Library has one or two as well.

    February 12, 2014

    • Roberta K.

That sounds like a great idea. I'll look into it. We have an offer to host 20 which might be enough but a larger venue might be better. More ideas please. Aiming for mid to end of March

      February 14, 2014

    • Roberta K.

I'm waiting for a confirmation for the date and time but hopefully this works out for Janet. If not I'll post again. Thanks Heidi for the great idea!
