Backyard Flock Diseases Repeat

We are very fortunate to have Janet Moore, a veterinary pathologist, come and speak to us for the second time for those who weren't able to make our other meeting. She is from the UC Davis San Bernandino location of the California Animal Health and Food Safety Laboratory. This is the lab where you can have your chickens examined by necropsy for cause of death. This will be a special opportunity to find out more about what diseases they are seeing in backyard flocks. She will help us understand the reports that are given on birds that have been sent in.

Janet has her own three hens, Matilda, Lucy and Ethel, so she's one of us and understands how it is to love chickens. Hope you can make it.

Thanks to Janet and Jill for a wonderful and informative presentation! We learned so much. Thanks so much to Brandi for hosting (hope you enjoyed the homegrown persimmons!), and to anyone else who organized and assisted in making this possible.

good morning everyone, its nice to be back home, and I'm sorry to have missed a very good event, correct me pls, I think I did change my RSVP to NO, while out of town with off and on internet connections and written that some others can take my place on this discussions,...also is there a dvd for Janet's Moore event? I have 10 hens for the last almost over 2 yrs now and yes, I have my share of wonders and inquiries and still wonders and inquire, so if you could kindly share the knowledge? and I LOVE D2D farms. For those who did not know they go to La Crescenta farmers market each week, not sure what day, but you can go pick your chicken if you do not want the delivery fee, unless some thing has change since.

Thanks to all for the really nice comments, I had a great time. I have just joined LAUCE (way overdue). Pearls, I think you may have contacted the lab (CAHFS) today. If you didn't get satisfactory answers send me an email and I will see if I can help.

I always look forward to meet up with my cyberfriends. Thank you for hosting Brandi G. The speaker was excellent. I would like to know more about how to keep the girls healthy and how to treat them naturally.

    Thanks for the persimmons, Anne!

Thank you to Brandi for hosting an awesome gathering, and Janet Moore and Roberta Kato and their team for the presentation. I was not able to stay for the whole thing but what info I came away with will certainly help with health problems that may arise down the road.

I wish I could have gone, but a family issue came up at the last minute and I could not attend. I did change my RSVP though! Shame on those who did RSVP positive then no showed. Maybe a 3peat could be a possibility??

Yes, thanks to Jill! She was the unsung hero trying to make slides work in the sun! That's no easy task.
Actually, we should all thank Roberta for sticking to this for so long. It was a long time in the making!

Thanks to those who showed up. Everyone came early and was very attentive. Janet and Jill provided a great presentation. I am very grateful that they volunteered to relay their expertise.

BTW we came home w folders/pamphlets/lab forms etc. from the CAHFS speaker/rep, I dont know about u guys but paper in hand info still trumps my smart phone only !

Big thanks to Brandi for hosting yesterday's event-really helpful information. The folder was full of great info that would've taken me hours on google to find. Thanks also to Roberta for all the helpful direction while there! Had to leave a little early to pick up my parents at the airport-otherwise would've thanked you ladies in person!

Janet, Brandi, the worker bee who did the slides (sorry, forget her name), the organizers, all were great. Now we just need an Orange County Chicken meet-up for those across the Orange Curtain.

  • Connie L.

Janet gave an awesome talk. She was so knowledgeable and patient. She answered everyone's questions. I'm so glad I went. Brandi is a wonderful hostess! Cannot believe her energy. Thank you, thank you. Brandi's chicken coop set up was very cool and well thought out.

What a wonderful presentation and terrific host Brandi was. As a fellow local organizer (Greater LA Aquaponics) my heart goes out to Brandi for all the effort made when people are so irresponsible to RSVP, then "NO SHOW". I ended my event early to make sure I could attend. I guess people are clueless as to the expense and effort it takes to host.
As for the presentation, amazing!. Next time you should charge $60 for all the no shows who still want to hear it. Would be worth every penny and more.

    1 · October 19

    • Brandi G

Alan, I'm not sure I want to host another one. It's the second time I've hosted and people have sent in an rsvp and then more than half flake out. I once had to change my plans due to a sick child, but I did change my rsvp! Most people have s smart phone, it's not that hard to change it. Or if you are on the fence about attending WAIT to rsvp. Seriously almost 40 people as no shows? That's not good.

      2 · October 19

  • Ann

So great! Lots of valuable info, beautiful setting, nice weather= great meetup!

    October 18

  • Brandi G

I wish people would update their rsvp or not flake, makes it easier to plan. 75 people is different than 35 or so. It's much harder for hosts not to know.

    4 · October 18

    • Brandi G

      Dave, yes.

      October 18

    • Brandi G

Very hard to plan when you expect 70 people and only 30 or so show up. I would have scaled it back a bit knowing there would be half the rsvps to show up. Thanks to everyone who helped set up and clean up and most of all, thanks for the fantastic presentation! I'd do it again with the hopes that people will be a bit better about showing up or changing an rsvp.

  • Ann

Thanks so much for hostessing Brandi, it's always such a pleasure to be at your lovely space :) I agree with you and feel it's VERY inconsiderate to not update your RSVP if you need to change your plans! There is quite a lot of preparation that goes into some of these Meetups! And to have the better part of 50 people who didn't show is beyond my comprehension!
In spite of that, it was a GREAT and very informative afternoon !!!

I sent it again. I think people who are confused are looking at comments. If you click on comments it will take you to the location in the string. There will now be two emails that look the same from Thurs and Fri nights. Those who rsvp'd after Thurs night will have one email. I have closed the rsvp's. Please don't post the address in the comments.

I did not put it in the comments. I did private message a couple of people though. Hopefully the emails went through.

Can u please post the time date and address again as there have been hundreds of confusing messages ?

    October 17

  • Kaliko O.

My apologies for the short notice. I just cancelled my RSVP. One of my hens died for no apparent reason today. Until I find out the cause I'm not comfortable being with other chicken owners in case it's contageous. I'd hate to be the reason someone else's chicken got sick or died. Please let me know if you decide to have another repeat. Thank you.

    October 16

    • Kaliko O.

could you please send me the address?

  • Brandi G

Everyone should check their meet up mailbox if you asked for the address. I sent it to Stephanie and several others. I don't have your email addresses. Meet up will not allow me to post and then remove it later, so I sent it via email or meet up message.

    October 17

  • Stephanie

I have to know the address by 7 AM as it is an hour drive for me, so I am visiting Eaton Center. If I don't have an address by 7, probably won't go as it is a long drive for me if not "trip chaining". I hope we will get the confirmation before 7 Am, please. I got an email saying the address we had originally been given was incorrect.

    October 17

    • Brandi G

Stephanie I sent it via message earlier today. Check your meet up messages.

      October 17

  • Anne

I received an email that I RSVPed to attend. However, I did not get an email with the address and map. Am going to try and message Brandi.

    October 17

  • Ann

YAYAYAY!!! My other thing got cancelled and I can attend this again!!! Brandi, how can I help you? Anything you need? Need me to get? Come early and help with? Please don't say nothing, I KNOW there's GOT to be SOMETHING!

    October 17

    • Ann

Im IN! What time would be optimal? Can I bring any additions to the snack tray or do you have it covered? Just let me know !

      October 17

    • Brandi G

Ann, maybe 30 min to an hour early? I'm planning cheese and crackers, chips and salsa, some fruit and nuts for snacks. I planned iced tea. I did need ice, but was planning to go out and get it in the morning, if you could bring ice, that would be really helpful. Also, anything that anyone would like to share as a snack would be welcome, allegedly a lot of people are coming!

      October 17

  • Lisa

Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to attend. I hope you can repeat this class in the future, this is a very important topic for all of us. Thank you!

Hi, I RSVP'd received email but it did not have an address. I clicked on directions and the map indicated the location of the meetup at a food truck in downtown L.A.. I hope they are not serving chicken!Lol.

    • Brandi G

I'll give you the address in a message. Look for one from me or send one to me to reply to.

    October 15

Go ahead and bring it if you want to make sure you have a chair. See everyone Sat.

      October 16

  • Roberta K.

Test email was just sent with some important information.

    October 15

  • Nancy P.

O.K. this is really confusing! Where is the event?

    October 15

    • Roberta K.

It is in Pasadena near Caltech and we will email you the address Thurs before the event.

      October 15

  • Roberta K.

I'll email out the address if you have rsvp'd by Thurs. It's in Pasadena near Caltech if that helps in the mean time. The speaker's voice i don't think will carry far enough for a full audience especially if people aren't quiet. The projector may also be hard to see to a big audience so I didn't intend the audience to be so big. Sorry, someone else changed that. If you are traveling from far away, come on the early side so you can sit up close. I don't want you to have to sit far away and not be able to see or hear. This is a fairly technical discussion.

Sooooo, I'm not getting any feedback about the possibility of taping this Meetup ( I provide the camera). Is that because it's not possible? Or no one wants to be responsible for doing it? Or it's a ridiculous idea? Or...?

It seems that it would be a great benefit to have something like this on our Page. I'm not sure if that is possible/ within the peramiters of Meetups capability space wise ( Roberta, you may know the answer?) but I'm putting it out there for fodder-thought :-)

    October 14

    • Roberta K.

I've asked for the slides and the issue is that the information is technically from the UC system and they have have to sign off anything that is distributed. So right now we can't tape it. Thanks for offering though.

      October 15

  • Lluccy

Brandi go back & look @ ur comment, look & see if there is a gray x in the upper right corner. That should erase it. I tried it out on my request for the address & I posted it b4 urs. Good luck

    October 14

  • Brandi G

Also, I just can't manage the taping, I've got my hands full. Sorry, Ann! Maybe someone can step up?

    October 14

  • Brandi G

Yes, I'd prefer to email the address. Also, I'd love it if the meet up folks can remove the address from the previous post.

    October 14

  • Lluccy

Thnx for address. Last I read a public venue was being considered. I understand reluctence it being a home. I agree w comment about taking it down & send to individuals by individual email.

    October 14

Any chance of taping this if I donate my Flip camera for the day? I know I have a little tripod too, the trick is finding it! I'm not taking myself off the list yet but I may have a conflict. I am REALLY interested in hearing this speaker though!!!
